I used the grip on my 7D mainly to interface with the GPS puck, through a USB Bluetooth device in the grip. That's the WTF-E5B grip I'm talking about, not just a grip with batteries inside. But it's the same size as the battery grip, and has the same vertical shooting buttons.

Later, the grips have been integrated into the 1DX/1DX Mark II, of course.
