Convert a black BG to white one?

Just wondering if there is possible - I've got a very nicely solid black background, but then have some translucent areas that are "darker" against the black BG.

Is there any easy method in photoshop to convert the blacks to whites, also adjusting for the darkened areas that are translucent?

Yes, it's possible.

But if you want to know HOW to do it, it is impossible to give a single accurate answer without at the very least a better description of the image.

If you really want a good answer, post the image.

Awesome pic, I look forward to the answers, I am not sure I know how to do this either especially given the content. I really like the shot as is though.

I would probably give up and try the shot again but with a lit white background, knowing my lack of patience and know how. :)

haha to be fair I actually took this ages ago, and I like it too, thanks! I have it hanging in my kitchen. Just can't help but feed my curiosity to see how it would REALLY look against white though. 24x36 with lots of black can be a bit overbearing, even though the lit-up strawberries do pop...

What is your level of expertise in masking?

And is your expectation to do this on the original high res file, or do you just need it for posting to a website?

I'm going to go grab a beer and sit down at my computer to check it out a little closer.

Edit: gotcha

New-ish to it. I can easily replace the blacks, but converting those midtones and given them a white tendency instead of black/shadowy is.. well, I have no idea how :)

I did a mask for the darker areas and gave it a sold white overlay... then on top of that, I painted more white with overlay layer blending. I guess I'm 75% of the way there, would just need to refine more to make it a little more.. realistic. Seems off to me

looks like you are lacking transparency in areas that should have it and have it in areas that shouldn't.

I was bored and spend a few minutes. It is tough, but I think you can create something that would look good printed. It won't ever look like you actually shot it with a white background, but it will be interesting, especially in a kitchen.
