Gators, somehow they're always right.

Today set a record for me on the road between the swamp and the big pond. I photograph birds there mainly but the gators cross from the swamp to the pond and vice versa so I occasionally snap a shot of one. They're like squirrels here so I don't pay a great deal of attention to them other than to stay out of their way. In an hour and fifteen minutes there were 10 crossings and one more waiting to cross when I left. They had me on my toes as I worked the tree and shrub line on both sides of the road. Two of them were about 10-12 feet and the others a bit smaller. It's common knowledge that gators can be quick on land in short bursts. Today I discovered just how fast when one of them got scared by me looking back at it when it started across. That thing was across that road and gone in a blink of an eye, no kidding had I blinked I would have missed it. That'll keep you on your toes for a while.

I'm glad we don't have them around here. :-)

Although there is a hatchery on a warm spring in southern Idaho that raises catfish, tilapia and gators.

Thanks very much. I've been around them for nearly the last 40 years so they've become background most of the time. Background that I give plenty of respect. :)

Yep that is what gets people hurt out in the wild, most have no idea just how fast large animals are when they want to be.
Great shot, we need a Gator thread :-)

Thanks Gary. I knew they were fast but they're much faster when 10 feet away then they are when on TV. A gators thread would be cool. Maybe a gator and croc thread combo.
