My wife and I tried both of them. We returned both. In our opinion, they were significantly inferior in IQ to Canon's 18-135 STM and 55-250 STM.

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Most of the reviews I've read have explicitly framed the issue as a choice between convenience and image quality.

I'm currently using an old non-image stabilized 18-55mm Canon kit lens and an equally old non-image stabilized 70-300mm ProMaster (rebadged Tamron?) zoom, migrated from my 350D to my recently purchased T4i.

The odds are that for ME, I'd gain in both convenience and image quality, replacing two so-so lenses with one probably at least somewhat better lens.

That having been said, when I finally replace my two existing general purpose lenses, It'll probably be with an 18-55mm STM or 18-135mm STM and a 55-250mm STM.

When I tested the Tamron 16-300 at the NEC camera show three years ago I was actually quite surprised at how good it was. I didn't really get to try many shots, but this series gives an idea of what it is capable of. I haven't tried the Sigma lens, but I do mostly use Sigma lenses. I use the older Sigma 28-300, which was optically a significant improvement over my old 75-300 Canon, the Sigma is though a full frame lens. The Tamron certainly seemed to be better than the Sigma 28-300.

Here are the sample images I shot on my 50D, and they are processed through LR. I used my normal +25 Clarity and +20 Vibrancy as well as my normal 70/1.0/0/100 sharpening settings along with the CA and lens profile corrections. There is also a little NR applied since they were shot at ISO 3200 in the arena.

Hope that this is of some help. I don't think the Sigma had been released back then though. If it had I would have probably tried it out too. Saying that I was far more interested in looking at the 150-600 C when on the Sigma stand. Also seeing the 200-500 f/2.8 in the flesh was a bit distracting.

I have the Sigma 18-300mm. It has its use. But I more recently bought a Sigma 18-35 1.8 Art and a Canon 70-200 2.8 vii. With these two, the 18-300mm has been idle in my bag. Debating on keeping it as I am eyeing a 24-70mm next.
