Hey Jared and Mystic ... I realise now that I have been getting you all mixed up and treating you as one person in my recent posts. Please accept my apologies for that. I hope you have been able to disentangle my confusion.

Hehe I actually find the a9 files to be noticeably softer than the a7RII files. I suspect that what you're disliking comes down to my processing style since you're happy with the a7RII. So more a subjective thing than anything technically specific to the a9.

I am in the wrong time zone to be able to continue contributing usefully to this conversation! Best to come back to it when a higher percentage of my brain cells is functioning.

But you highlight an important point ... processing preferences are hugely important ... and SOOC is almost irrelevant, since cameras have their own processing preferences.

Absolutely. The one of my daughter that you like was basically SOOC....just minor corrections done...the other stuff was pretty heavy handed.

In terms of cameras though, the differences come from the latitude you have to push the files in post. In that regard, files from Sony sensors tend to have more head-room than Canon files. This is something that is appreciated more by the photographer than the viewer.

At the neighborhood playground and seeing that they opened up the small splash area really helps on a 90 degree afternoon. Interesting to note was the a9 was able to pick up the eye from distance where as the a6500 and the a7rII before it would not until the face filled up a much bigger portion of the scene.
