Hello
I'll be shooting an exam next week. I've a 6D and a X-T10 camera. Should I go with a 50 mm on full frame or 35 mm on aps-c for portrait. The 50 mm cost me 100 USD and the 35 mm cost me 300 USD.

I'll be using the lens for some street photography in the future. For the 6D I got a Sigma 105/2.8 for portrait and for the Fuji I only got a 16-50 lens.

What should I do?

FF will usually have higher quality, especially if you need high ISO (indoor, no flash, et cetera).
Take the 6D.

1Dx, 5D2 and some lenses

And the 50 is cheaper. And between the aperture and image circle, it soaks up a lot more light. And probably has a bigger resale market if it ever came to that. And unlike adding the 35 to your Fuji 16-50, is a new focal length for that body. Which also complements the existing FL you have for that body.

Yeah go 50. I thought about posting this yesterday, but I'm the last guy who should be advising, which is why I held off.

I love a like, but feedback (including CC) is even better!

Sounds like you want to get a 50mm (or "equivalent") for this exam, is that right? But also will look to be using the lens for street photography.

If I have that right then really my question would be what camera are you more comfortable shooting with and which one do you see yourself using for street shooting more often?

If the answer to both questions is the same then get the lens for that system. If the answer is different then which activity do you put more weight towards, the exam or the street shooting?

Personally I'd say neither and get a used Fuji 35mm f1.4....but I am a Fuji shooter and I love the 35 f1.4 so take that with a grain of salt :p

I'll be using the lens for some street photography in the future. For the 6D I got a Sigma 105/2.8 for portrait and for the Fuji I only got a 16-50 lens.

What should I do?

I'm assuming your looking at a Canon 50mm STM f/1.8.I'd suggest analyzing your common focal length you typicall shoot.

I purchased the 50mm STM and I ended up returning it. It's decent for inexpensive glass and for the price I probably should have just kept it.

For street photography with your Fuji there are couple of typical options like the 23mm f/2, 27 f/2.8 pancake and 35 f/1.4 or f/2. I really think you should cover your ground with a prime that you will use alot.

I don't really care much for the 50mm prime on my full frame. That's probably one reason why I have not purchased a 35 f/1.4 or f/2 fuji prime. Some street shooters prefer 35mm equiv or 50mm equiv.....pick your favourite :)

Looking at your gear list you need some sort of a wide angle lens for your 6d. If you want a smaller lens that produces incredible micro contrast and colours the Canon 35mm f/2IS is seriously something you should look at. The Canon 35L mk1 or 2 or the Sigma ART primes are very big but that's expected for an f/1.4 prime lens. If you just want to save money just pick up an inexpensive 50mm STM.

For your fuji you can consider buying a 50mm f/2 prime. It's a longer lens than a fuji 35 f/1.4 so you can potentially get more bokeh with the 50mm prime (fuji crop sensor = 75mm) due to compression for your portrait work even though the lens is only f/2 wide open. The beauty of that lens is low price. The 56 f/1.2 is the ideal niche and more for a portrait lens $$$$. I guess the 35 f/1.4 prime can be more versatile in portrait work as well as street photography.

seems kinda weird to have two systems with not many lenses in either system...right now all your wider set ups are with the fuji...if that's the typical way you go then get the 35mm...but if you're willing to take out the 6D with a smaller lens than the 50 would work...

I have chosen to have it in this way. The Fuji images are much nicer to edit due to the colors and the dynamic range that my 6D does not offer. Fuji I have chosen to use for street photography, documentation and nature / landscape. My 6D has previously been used to all areas but at the moment, I have chosen to use 6D to photograph wildlife and macro. Loves 6D iso handling and focusing in poor lighting conditions, where my X-T10 or Fuji overall has not really been up to date. So, therefore, I do not have so many lenses for both systems.

Now lately, I miss an all-round zoom to 6D. Maybe a 24-70 or 24-105 and then it feels complete for 6D. To my fuji I think of a 50-230 as a supplement.
