I have a client who wants a print of them on fine art paper. I shot a 30 second exposure on a tripod which captured the Milky Way and then then used a single speedlite in a softbox to illuminate him. This is not my photo but it looks similar to this: http://markg.com.au …girlsbystarlight-5438.jpg (external link)

Just curious what kind of fine art paper you would chose to print something like this on. I have never used a rag paper such as Canson Infinity or Hahnemuhle, but I would like to try. However, I'm not sure if a rag matte paper is best for a photo with a lot of black and the points of light (stars).

Any input you can provide is appreciated. Thanks!

Haven't used Canson paper. Hahnemuhle is very good.

Matte is harder to print on than Glossy, to be sure, but the paper is capable. You can cut the paper in smaller pieces and enter a custom size for test printing.

Get the basic image right first. Then do a soft proof. Add adjustment layers just for the print (curves to put blacks and contrast where you want it).

Go a little crunchier than you think you will need.

A little grain can work well, too. Do this at the end.

C&C always welcomed...
On my images, of course, and on my words as well--as long as it's constructive :).

Innova soft textured natural white is a decent paper that works well in a range of situations. You could try soft proofing different papers and enabling the gamut warning to spot potential problem areas.

For best results I would suggest custom printer profiles, but you can download profiles from the paper manufacturers and use the above technique to have an idea how they will look, before purchasing the paper.

One consideration often neglected is how the paper will feed with your particular printer. Some heavy rag papers can make certain printers choke, so it's worth establishing what your printer can handle, before placing a big order. Hahnemuhle is beautiful, but not suited to every image.
