First time shooting with a flash, C&C welcome

Looks pretty good.

It looks like you did a good job under exposing the ambient, but a little more fill flash would help in some of the images +1/3 to 1/2 stop (+2/3- +1 works well for me in camera).

I would say don't be so weary of the flash. In some images, they still have a slight yellow/green tone to them. Adding a bit more fill flash will help alleviate the color cast from the grass and light coming through the trees, unless they are right on the grass and the flash angle is too steep, you can then start bouncing green back into their faces. This is also where a smaller softbox helps as it is a larger light source and wraps around them more.

The larger light source and a little bit more light will add color back into their eyes. Less so when you are shooting multiple people, even more so when you are dealing with one/two people or closer up head shots.

Getting the flash off camera helps as well, though this is not really an issue here.

All in all for your first time with flash these did turn out good, i would just work in PP with the slight color cast. Great expressions and i love the composition of the 2nd to last image.
I like the B&W just the way it is.

Awesome, thanks so much for the feed back. I will definitely keep working with the flash, I feel it makes the subject a lot crisper. Now the yellow/green, did you mean the kids? and what is color cast? I'm still learning here lol. I wish I had a softbox i know if would help and get all the way around, I'll get there one day but for now the speed flash will have to do.

Yes, the kids skin tones are toward the green/yellow colors. Before delivering the images, it may be a good idea to get a test print so that you can get a good reading of your colors. Sometimes when you are used to your monitor and post process, every thing looks fine until you see a print.

Color cast is when the light reflecting off of a surface picks up the color of the surface.
The sun reflecting off of the grass will make peoples skin tones green. If you are next to a brick wall, the reflective light can make peoples skin turn red.

This is not normally an issue when using fill flash unless it is a baby etc that is laying in the grass. They are so close to the grass that the reflected light would be green.
This is often an issue with natural light in a park where everything is green.

If it were me, I'd bring the highlights down a bit, but most importantly, to me, I would tone down the saturation. It is a matter pf personal preference, but I dislike oversaturated images.

The yellow and green if far beyond the saturation I find enjoyable. In fact, I suspect the ground on the unadjusted photo where the yellow is, may have seemed more white, where sunlight overexposed highlights (which seems fine in bokeh).
