Hello everyone i have been trying to tether my canon 6d and 7d2 into lightroom and so far i haven't had any luck the program with only show what camera that is attached but nothing else works. I have gone to the Adobe site and so far i have updated the firmware , also deleted the windows lightroom prefences agprefs file and still have no luck. I have the lightroom and photoshop cc so i guess i don't get the online chat. It will tether with the canon software but my course instructor said i should get the tethering issue with lightroom looked after. Any help would be great.

Plug in USB cable to computer & camera. Start LR. Shutdown EOS Utility.
In LR menus: FILE>TETHERED>START TETHERED CAPTURE.

Tethered won't work in LR while EOS Utility is running.

All of this begs the question: Why bother with tethered in LR? You have no control over the camera from the computer. With EOS Utility you can change everything but the mode without touching the camera. If you turn on the 6D's wireless, you can work without the USB cable. I can't imagine shooting tethered from LR.

Sorry but i should have said that the canon utility is not running when i am trying to tether in lightroom. The lighting class that i am taking the instructor tethers into lightroom and when i mention that lightroom tether does not work he asked me to try and resolve the issue and so far with adobe the best that you can do is rummage through their help files.

I guess the gist of my point is that there is no reason to tether in LR. You can't control anything on the camera from LR. All you get is an automatic real-time download. That is not very useful. You may as well shoot not-tethered and just import into LR when you are done. EOS Utility is actually functional for controlling the camera while tethered. In other words: useful.

If the instructor insists on shooting tethered with LR, perhaps asking 'why' is not a bad idea. Or looking for a different instructor.

Not sure what the big deal is in shooting straight into lightroom i always use canon software with no issues and the instructor is ecellent its just his way of doing things.

Tethering with LR is not very useful if it does not work. If you can tether on the same machine with the same cable using EOS Utility but not with LR, then something is amiss in the LR tether chain. I don't use LR nor do I shoot tethered, so I cannot help you there.

A simple workaround is to tether, control and shoot with EOS Utility and set up LR to watch the folder where you are capturing images with EOS Utility - set this up using LR's Auto Import options - "Watched Folder." This way you get the control of EOS Utility (and remove LR's tethering constraints from the workflow chain) with auto import into LR for practically real-time review of the tethered shot in LR.

At least this will hopefully work while you figure out why LR tethering is not working for your particular combination of equipment.

I don't have a Windows machine so I'd suggest uninstalling LR and start new. I assume by your comments that your cameras are compatible and the USB cable works so I'd reinstall along with any firmware updates. You should be able to launch LR, start tether and import images as shot. Does the camera appear in the tether window? You should be able to make adjustments to the first image and then automatically apply the adjustments to subsequent images. I rarely use LR as I prefer Capture One Pro but the process is basically the same.

Lightroom will recognize the model of the camera but that's it. It will not show and other information and the shutter button will not work. I did try just taking a shot using the shutter release on the camera but the picture did not import.

Just perhaps your PC has USB 2.n sockets while your instructor's laptop has the more recent USB 3.n sockets...the 7DII cable is USB 3.n connector. While it should be backward compatible into a USB 2.n socket, there might be some issue that prevents that from happening. I just plugged my 7DII into my own 10+ year old desktop for the first time, and the USB 3.n cable and camera connection worked fine into my USB 2.n ports and there was a driver load for the camera. Canon Utility started up automatically and then recognized the 7DII, I made a time change and an author name addition, then I shut that program down I then started LR 5.7, which presented the 7DII as one of the file sources for Import into the Library, and the standard Import dialog.

I have, until this recent tetherring, always simply removed the CF (or SD) from the camera and plugged it into the PC's integrated memory card reader. Much less bothersome, since the L-bracket somewhat interferes with access to the camera's USB3 port.
