I'm excited as my 24-105 shipped today. So now I have my complete Sony kit. It's built around slower zooms and modest speed primes.

24-105
70-300
Irix 2.4/15
2/28
1.8/55
1.8/85

I retain Canon for the fast zooms and 100-400.

I'm interested to play with this kit on several expeditions planned this summer. I think it takes a lot of use to really know a system.

That's a rather complete "travel" setup.

It's nice having a really flexible kit that's still relatively small and can provide great quality.

and yes, it takes a bit of time to understand the sony way. I think many people that jump the sony wagon, and jump off, often didnt come to understand the system. Complexity can be a disadvantage, and often, can be in your favor. I kind of dig a lot of the features like crop mode, ibis, 4K + 1080 120, in body AF/MF control, BBMF, peaking, but it also adds complexity that other brands often dont have, since they may not have the features.

Mickey I was very young.
I remember living in a mansion that had something crazy like 8 bedrooms and the ceilings throughout the 3 story home
were insanely high. I think Sherman spared this city? I remember watching the first footsteps on the Moon while there.
We would do weekends in a cottage in Panacea...long ago memories :)

Throughout the Panhandle/Redneck Riviera region, you never know what you are going to stumble onto as far as property. Big estates, historical points of interest and everything in-between are in play. I wonder why Sherman chose to spare Thomasville? I'm certainly not complaining, though, as the city has some charm to it.

It is pretty cool I'm walking in your footsteps up there! I took my second trip to Panacea a few months back, and even went out to Alligator Point to see what all the fuss was about (think pint-sized Tybee Island with only residences/rentals). We've hit up the Gulf Specimen Lab both times out there, as it has lots for the kids to touch and poke around at. The eels below, we didn't touch them :)

Sea Hare, my daughter loved it.

off topic if you don't mind.

My son is 16yo, a sophomore. I have no problem with the US Army but I really prefer him to go to either the Air Force or the Navy.

At school the Army are talking to the kids including my son without our knowledge. Even if the curious kids will come to them they should not talk to the kids unless permitted by the parents.

Today my son just texted me from school asking permission to join today's Army's physical training. yes without our knowledge. Can they do that?

I talked to the local Air Force Recruitment office a few minutes ago. They said kids can't even join any physical training until they're 17 but sometimes the Army bends rules.

Yeah when I was in high school the army recruiters basically said the same to me....i said my parents wouldn't want me in the army, but they offered to take me out bowling and we didn't have to tell my parents. Much respect to the army guys, but in hindsight, its pretty unethical to tell a kid to lie to their parents.

Thanks for sharing their lies.

I also have my friends son. He's now into the Army but he said all what his recruiters told him were lies.

The first formation PT running song I learned as an AOC after I joined the Navy:

My recruiter screwed me too! ". :-)

It's nice having a really flexible kit that's still relatively small and can provide great quality.

That's how I see it. One item that has me excited about my new Sony set is a move to some smaller lenses matched to the smaller body. I spent years working myself into a heavier and more expensive kit, pushing for the nth degree of performance or super fast apertures. And to some extent, looking hard for small gem lenses on Canon still leaves them on a big SLR. Also, a lot of the smaller primes are quite old designs. The EF 85/1.8 does not compare favorably with the much newer FE 1.8/85.

For now I still need a few of these fast zooms for sports (with my Canon) but when that ends I look forward to a smaller kit. I observe three things, which people may argue with as they see it.

1) Having owned f/1.2 zooms, I realized that faster than f/2 is often too fast for usable DOF. There are some shots where super fast apertures can be well used, but you pay a lot in both mass and $$$ for the option. As I find myself shooting mostly at f/2 anyway, I like being able to get a modern ~f/2 prime that is so much smaller.

2) These modern lenses (which is every Sony E-mount, they are all new) are all very sharp in the middle region. Even a 'consumer' zoom like the FE 70-300 (not that it is cheap at ~1000 street value) are very sharp in the middle. That was not the case with such lenses 10 years ago, perhaps.

3) If you do want to stoke your GAS, the next frontier is to look at corner performance. Like this thread here: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4274050 (external link) . But you know when you are looking for sharp extreme corners at f/2, you are pretty much just trying to talk yourself into the more expensive lens. :p

Great shots!
I love the eels.
I also used to live in Washington NC on the Pamlico Sound and we would on Sunday afternoon 'fish' for blue crabs....often we'd catch an eel and throw it on the ground for our king Siamese to tackle and
have mortal combat!

yeah, I agree.

I got down the 50L/85L rabbit hole during canon days simply because options werent that good. I liked the iq of the 50 1.8 for instance, but at that time, it couldnt focus worth anything. the 50 1.4 broke one me twice, 85 CA was pretty bad and a tad dull on the colors. I liked the Canon 28 IS, but it's kind of big looking back now, that I own the FE 28. The 40 STM replaced with the FE 35 f2.8. I really liked the 40, but dare I say, I love the FE 35 :p. Very happy with the sony fe 50 1.8, it's the cheap 50 I've always wanted. FE 85, high quality, but I dont carry it as often as it's a "big" lens, even if it's relatively small ;-)a

#3 is especially funny. Pin sharp extreme edges wide open usually carries a hefty price tag and / or associated size. My FE 35 is that way, $800 for a 35mm f2.8 is kind of ridiculous. I'de have no problems with IQ if downgraded to FE 28/50 levels, but so should the price down to the 100-150 mark. I paid much less on the used market, and indeed it's a great lens, but even the used price I see it as too high.

One of the casual shots from my friends wedding in CA a few weeks back...one of my other best friends and his wife, strolling the Ficus Tree lined streets...about as street as I get...I did get a couple others of strangers...might edit one or two of them...just always feels awkward...
