It was so good that I sold my beloved Sigma 85mm EX lens that I thought I'd never sell!!!

I have the Canon Sigma 85 f/1.4 EX as well that I've been adapting with a Metabones for quite a while. I've been debating on selling it and getting the new Sigma FE 85 Art or the Sony FE 85 1.8. I would love the 85 GM but I think it's too steep a price since I don't really shoot much for paid gigs and seems too big an investment. I'm just hesitant to lose the 1.4. Just curious why you decided to make the switch?

I really love macro photography. It's a very relaxing experience and makes me look at the world in a different way.

I have the Sony FE 90 Macro as well that I use mainly for food shots for a restaurant. I really would like to start using it more for bugs, flowers etc. but can never seem to get as close to the subjects as everyone on here does. Did you use extension tubes for any of these shots? or focus stacking? Every time I try to shoot an insect it moves or flies away...lol What the hell is everyone's secret of how you manage to get theses wonderful shots so close?

i have a macro lens for APS-C but wanted a macro lens for a ff. macro is not my main thing though so i just wanna look for a vintage macro lens. any suggestions?

Add extension tubes to the 85gm. You lose the ability to focus to infinity, but good enough for less critical use

Just curious why you decided to make the switch?

I think you would like that it's really sharp wide open, and the size and weight are both very good.

Having the 1.8 wiped out any lust for a faster 85 for me, it was so good, otherwise I'de have picked up the GM for the added butter.

Gotta consider the total package, the 85 1.8 is smallish, native, and very high quality optics. That package in its entirety is very compelling. I generally wing the 85 as much as possible to avoid having to bring the 135 out, due to the substantial size difference.

Just got my 85 1.8 yesterday. I’m floored how well it performs.

Giving up the 2/3 stop is the only battle but the lens passes my IQ demands

The sony rep mentioned to me that the 85 f/1.8 has virtually the identical design internally to the GM. The difference is more glass for the f1.4.

85 f/1.8 is sold out locally. No stock for a while....

Virtually identical and more glass and faster aperture doesn’t make much sense to me?

More glass for the faster GM 85mm. This is regurgitating information from the Sony rep I was speaking to.

There’s a reason why there’s more glass in the pro level f1.4 primes and bigger f2.8 zooms.

What I mean is the fact it has more glass and a faster maximum aperture doesn’t equate to “virtually identical” in my book regardless of who said it

A shot of the new Frost Tower going up. I caught this reflection shot from the San Pedro Creek Culture Park with the Zeiss 35mm f2 ZE.
