Anyone using Vello battery grip on any of your Sonys? I put one on my wife's A7 and liked it so much I put one on my 5D and 7D and the latter was never gripped before. I was looking to see if there was one for the A7Riii I'm getting ready to order but there isn't yet. I will wait since they are around 75 bucks.

because i'm in aperture priority and i have no control over the shutterspeed.

and i want enough shutterspeed to freeze the subject or help with my shaky hands. of course if there's plenty of light the ISO will stay at the lowest.

that's on natural light. different case if i use strobe but still i like less than 50% flash contribution on my strobe(except if the background is too bright) to avoid having a flashy look so i might still need the ISO if needed.

review Dave Morrow's video, he wanted his shutterspeed to be at 1/15sec so he raised the ISO

and for the most part on my normal portrait session around the golden hour, maybe the max ISO will be ISO400 to get a decent shutterspeed, which is nothing on this camera.

why not use shutter priority then? I’m confused as to why you are trying to make Av do what tv does ?

Sounds like you would be better in manual or manual + auto iso

sometimes auto ISO give us some weird numbers. sometimes it goes really up. but it's a good option too.

and for the most part on my normal portrait session around the golden hour, maybe the max ISO will be ISO400 to get a decent shutterspeed, which is nothing on this camera.

So there's lots of ways to skin a cat, but I think auto ISO Sony's minimum shutter speed setting, and the ISO performance of the body simplified things a lot for me.

Basically when shooting portraits or events, shutter speed usually only matters to the extent that my photos are not blurry because of motion or shaky hands. This is a non-issue like you said for outdoor portraits, as the ambient light is so high that your shutter speeds are really fast, but when the ambient light drops and the metering system is doing its thing, I want established lower bound thresholds to make sure that the camera isn't setting the shutter speed too low. For posed portraits, I know I'm pretty safe at 1/125's, so that's my lower threshold most of the time. 1/125's is sufficient for most event shooting too...particularly if you're using a flash, since the flash will freeze your subject, but I might push the minimum up to 1/250's or something faster for a dance sequence.

But long story short, when ambient light drops, the minimum shutter speed setting is basically setting my shutter speed, and the ISO is automated.

Bonus: I have a focus recall setting mapped with a 1/1000s shutter speed, ISO auto, and aperture wide open...that way if something unexpectedly starts moving quickly, I can snap it with a fast shutter speed.

Outwith landscapes I use auto iso 100% of the time (with Av). Never noticed an issue with it selecting too high a number? I have a custom button set to control the auto iso so that I can quickly change between “slower”, “slow”, “normal”, “fast” and “faster”. If I’m shooting people and want 1/125 minimum I set it to “fast”. If I then want to shoot a static subject I change it on the fly to “slower” and it lets the ibis do its thing and gives you the slowest shutter speed it can

have you tried the recall function?

it's made for these types of scenarios I think. For instance, shooting landscapses, I can be in full M mode with ISO 100, 1/2", F8, MF, Single Shot, custom 1 slot. I see a dynamic situation emerging, I can hit and hold the recall button. That switches me over to AV mode which has the "fast" setting already there, F4 (or whatever you program), AUTO ISO, AND Wide area AF with high speed shooting. it allows me to shoot AF quickly in quick situations, and as soon as I let go of the custom button, it's back to Custom 1 slot. I saw it on youtube, and named the "Oh crap" mode, it's pretty darn nice to toggle into a whole different set of settings rather than fiddle and try to get back in a completely different shooting style.

I do that too (haven’t used it much yet though but set it after reading a post you made previously) but the setting I described above gives me on the fly control of my minimum shutter speed with auto iso. I find that really useaful switching between people shots and static shots whilst maintaining aperture priority with auto iso

I asked this before and can’t remember (or find) the answer in this thread so I’ll ask again.

Since SR app works on the a7r is there any reason why that body wouldn’t make a good tripod landscape camera for wide angle lenses?

I’m struggling to justify to myself keeping the a7rii just for the app so thought that might be a nice landscape option

I'm not overly clued up on all the latest specs of different models as you all know.... :)

But, I do know you don't need all the bells & whistles for landscape so to me, yes it makes sense....

its also cheaper than most of my lenses now so hopefully it wouldn’t bug me when not in use (it plays on my mind when expensive kit is just sitting like my a7rii right now)

For my latest round of Sonys I went brand name. Reason I did is because I can charge both batteries in the grip via USB, I couldn't do that with my last round of Vellos, but that was a generation ago, maybe they added that feature.
