Hit up pinterest and make yourself a board of poses you like. No shame in pulling your phone out midshoot if you draw a blank while shooting.

For guys, particularly teenage guys, start with the simpler poses and get a sense of what your subject can pull off. Most guys cant pull off anything other than standard poses so use the environment to switch things up. I'd try to talk them beforehand to see if you can incorporate something from an extracurricular activity or something. I.e. a football

Thanks Carlo.

The thing about sony is that the images are already incredibly contrasty so even natural light the shadow transition isn't as smooth as other camera brands. Even natural light has an incredible "pop" to the image.

Another thing about speedlights is that I'd rather sometimes match the F stop the available surroundings so that the subject and background are not brutally blowing out the highlights. However when the environment is ugly I'll happily blow out the background to cream so the background can look pleasing :P

Man I'm still adapting to Sony but I'm finding I see a lot portraits that are too sharp. I almost find the Sony system to be a "negative" as it's too sharp even when the Lightroom sliders are defaulted to minimal.......LOL!!!

So you've mentioned this several times, but it isn't anything that can't be "corrected" in post and takes very minimal effort

Here's a different take of the image I posted earlier...pulled back the contrast and clarity and tuned the orange HSL sliders to reduce the apparent contrast on the skintones.

Not sure if that's the look you're going for, but there is a lot of headroom in the Sony files to create whatever final look you want.

I could say it's from the old bottle that's almost empty but in reality...it's tea chilled with acrylic ice cubes. :-)

Oh, and I carefully placed gold foil paper cutouts behind both the bottle and glass supported by a piece of styrofoam to reflect light through them from behind. They were aimed at the light source on the right (camera) side.

You can see the foil cutouts in this bts shot. I had a flash shooting through a 7" reflector on the floor aiming at the background, two strip boxes on the right shooting through a DIY tracing paper diffuser in a window screen frame and a 4th flash firing through the softbox on the left. I hand held another diffuser in front of it for the final shot.

I've been adapting much better with Sony files as I've owned the A7iii for over a month. I've created a lot of presets in Lightroom Classic CC as well as incorporating a tonne of Xrite passport light situations. Xrite does tame some of the stronger intense Sony colours.

The punch in portraits I get with unaltered RAW Sony files is mind boggling. I'd need to hit similar images with my Canon RAW with 20+ contrast, Clarity 5-7+, even a tweak of Dehaze 5+.

I've been working hard to manipulate Sony files and it's massively different from many camera manufacturers I've used. Scouring the net I've really been analyzing Sony users portrait work and generally many certainly have this punch and piercing look often.

It's all about personal taste. I do feel that many Sony users should be pulling a bit of contrast or at least uplift some shadows from the RAW file. More often than not it crushes the blacks to destroy detail.

I do agree the Sony file is very flexible. It has a certain crystal clear digital look that is much different to majority of crop and ff sensors. This is not really a negative as you can manipulate in post. My observation is that it's just requiring more attention depending on the different lighting situations.

Here is the fun way to look at it. With Canon you have to do a bunch of additions. With sony you do a bunch of subtractions.

i forget my point... oh well. Haven't shot much the past few weeks.

Your so correct and soooo on point !!

I've been finding less is more with Sony :)

I've been using my Sony A7iii a lot more than my Fuji. I'm just on a mission to get familiar with Sony at this moment :)
