Carlo, are you still rocking the rx1rii? I made the mistake of looking through a load of image galleries on it and now considering trying it out

I sold it, but miss it big time.

I plan to grab one again one day once finances allow. It's worth having if you're a heavy 35mm shooter.

Sometimes I like to make a psd file of a sig I like. This usually entails several layers that can be turned on or off as the situation...or mood calls for. Here's one I just finished, for now, trying to replicate a quill pen signature plus a couple of underlines and an ink drop. For each of these layers, I added a layer mask so I could adjust the opacity in small areas to make the ink appear more natural. They can also be moved around to taste as well. The background is just to make everything more visible and will be turned off when the sig is used on an image.

This way, like my other psd signatures, I can add the whole group to any image and then turn off what I don't want. I can resize the entire group by selecting the group layer and using the transform tool (ctl+t}.

Portrait shooters, how much is reasonable to charge for a family event? One of my architecture clients asked me to shoot a family event. I have no idea how much to charge for the session and then the editing.

I also would love to have one as a carry all the time type camera.

Is the AF pretty much on par with the a7rii? (I could live with that)

A family event or a family portrait session...very different things.

Yes possibly

Client would like photos of the family to capture the special day (75th birthday for my client's mom). Small gathering of 14 people including 6 grand kids. I think it's going to be more documentary in nature instead of formal poses. I will confirm though.

it's probably the battery life that scares me the most, I hear it's like half that of the R2.

Yeah was reading it was poor, like 200-250 a charge. Still I find myself really wanting one

Smaller batteries so will have to carry about 4 of them

I charge $150 per hour.

If its a 4 hour party or so, it gets expensive for a less important event, so I usually encourage them to hire me for just the key parts of the event.

I personally don't enjoy shooting small events, so if I do, I make sure its worth my time :-)

That said, if its a client for other things I shoot, I'll very often do the shoot at a discount. Just make sure you tell the what the standard rate is and that they understand its a discount...mostly for referrals. If you start shooting small events for cheap, people will start to hit you up as a budget photographer and you don't want to brand yourself as such.

Yeah battery life is not the greatest. But more than adequate for random outings where you're snapping a few things here and there.

I seriously miss that cam. I've tried so many ways of replicating the shooting experience with the a7 cameras, but nothing really fills that void. Legitimately compact, with uncompromised IQ that never has you second guessing yourself for not bringing your main camera out.

edit: for long outings (like Disney trips) in lieu of carrying a bunch of batteries, I put a portable USB battery pack in my bag. The rX1rII comes with this really compact micro-usb battery charger, and its easy to charge the battery you aren't using. Of course you can also charge the rx1rII via the battery pack too.

I remember reading this recently. It certainly peaked my interest. The quality control issues that Bastian encountered are a concern as is the quality of the sunstars but the bokeh, overall rendering, AF, EVF, and portability are very appealing.
