I thought about going with the iMAC but I think I may end up with a fully spec'd Mac Mini instead, I just love the form factor of those things and the latest update has made it a contender for me. I thought about the hackintosh route as well, I've built more than my share of workstations in the past but at stage in my life I couldn't be bothered, I just want something that works straight out of the box. The plot thickens. There are really mixed reviews online about the performance of the 2017 imac 27 5K with lightroom CC. Some are saying its really sluggish and has issues when scrolling the library in loupe view. Others are saying its fine. There seems to be an issue with Adobes code as smooth scroll is windows enabled only (However my current macbook doesnt have the issue so not sure if that actually is the issue). Theres also a lot of confusion as some people chime in on the threads who have the 2015 imac or older versions of lightroom which doesnt help clarify the 2017 imac with LRCC issue. Im now worried about spending the money on the imac and end up frustrated with lightroom. I really love the mac OS though. I may just revert back to the original plan and build a PC that I know will be fast (and upgradeable) Leica M11 | Leica Q2 | Sony α7RV

Nothing is ever simple Looks like you can run one externally, but then that kinda kills the clean, compact aspect and probably the value proposition, too. The last 48 hours of researching has made me realise I really want to stay in OS X so I’m thinking I will hang fire and see if apple release a 2018/2019 iMac with the newer CPUs. The 2017 model was released just before intel released coffee lake and its the 8700k coffee lake chip that has a high potential to be in the top 27” iMac if upgraded (also the chip I was planning my pc build around). If they do that I’ll be all over an iMac Leica M11 | Leica Q2 | Sony α7RV

Very happy with it so far. We have several iMacs at our office and to me the biggest factor is the main drive. The processors aren’t that different and the one with platters is slow as a dog. Fusion drives are a step up. I run the one with platter off an external SSD and it’s faster. So you may want to try that with your current machine as a stop gap. My current MacBook Pro retina (late 2015) still handles everything fine (struggles with some things but generally ok). I just want a faster desktop machine with bigger screen for my main editing. Whilst they are all quick some aren’t optimised for lightroom for example the 2015 iMac is faster then the 2017 iMac for lightroom CC by all accounts. I’m sure the new processor would solve the issues though Leica M11 | Leica Q2 | Sony α7RV

Wide-field astro...1.4 is a dream, and the fly-wire focus is way way improved for manually dialing in, though I've read that at 1.4 AF is indeed possible using the zoom in 10x and then AF. Weight wise even if I have to walk a bit I can carry this one and the Laowa 15/2. Landscaping looks fine to me- ![]() That shot is fantastic--colors, pop, sharpness and composition. The last I looked, which was a while back, tbh, it seemed to mostly help with zooming/panning on images with extensive cloning and stuff like that. I’m sure the new processor would solve the issues though I have a high-spec original late-2014 iMac 5k (i7, SSD, 32GB RAM) and it’s been fine with the newest version of LRCC, with only an occasional slowdown. I would have thought the newer ones would be better, that seems odd. I guess I’ll wait before considering an update to mine, lol. I have noticed that the move from High Sierra to Mojave has seemed to slow things down a bit in the develop module (I’ve had some beachballs for a few seconds here and there that I didn’t have with High Sierra), but that may just require an optimization update on Adobe’s part.

I’m going to hold out for the next edition I've been reading up on it as well. I'm pretty much decided to go the mini route but I think I'm also going to hold off a bit as well, at least untill into the new year that should give some of the early adopters a chance to flush out any issues with the new mini. If the GPU is a problem with the work I normally do I suppose I could always add an external E-GPU but that kind og kills the form factor and drives up the cost significantly for me. Sony A1, A7R2

Not sure how much an issue the lack of gpu is currently and no idea when new iMac is due so stuck in limbo. The Mac mini looks sweet apart from that gpu issue.
