I like shooting portraits with natural light, but one of the big reasons I like dragging artificial lights outdoors is that I have more flexibility with where I frame my subjects when I'm not tied to the location and direction of natural light sources. i.e. I can get the dramatic burn of a late sunset in the background of the frame, and still get a good exposure on my subject. Without a strong fill to balance the subject and ambient exposures, they would be heavily backlit, underexposed, and have a lot of unflattering directional shadows across their faces.

I love your photography! I agree with your post 100%. That’s why I have a variety of flashes and softboxes.....and know how to use them. I just wish I was more dedicated to pulling stuff out from time to time!
