I like shooting portraits with natural light, but one of the big reasons I like dragging artificial lights outdoors is that I have more flexibility with where I frame my subjects when I'm not tied to the location and direction of natural light sources. i.e. I can get the dramatic burn of a late sunset in the background of the frame, and still get a good exposure on my subject. Without a strong fill to balance the subject and ambient exposures, they would be heavily backlit, underexposed, and have a lot of unflattering directional shadows across their faces.

I love your photography! I agree with your post 100%. That’s why I have a variety of flashes and softboxes.....and know how to use them. I just wish I was more dedicated to pulling stuff out from time to time!

Thank you!

Yes I usually have my wagon of lighting crap with me on shoots. I don't always use them, but it's good to have them handy when the situation calls for them.

This first shot really has a nice 1950's look to it to me. I played with a B&W edit and thought it looked very nice.

I decided to save it at 1280 px on the long side but kept the 6x4 aspect ratio as that has the look of old-style film rolls. I desaturated (ctl+shft+U), then bumped the contrast up and lowered the white point a little using a curves adjustment. Finished with a white border to give it a 'snapshot' look.

I went to the coast today to escape the choking smoke hovering over the bay area (and most of Northern California). It was slightly better, but still very noticeable. The gray sky is not fog. Still, the elk went about their business.

Sooo, I crashed the drone today (DOH!!). I was shooting some video of a bridge we built recently at work and stupidly misjudged the height of the trees I was standing under. I was flying the drone around in an arc whilst rotating to keep the bridge in the frame from about 45feet and I heard it hitting the branches on the tree above. Before I could react it was crashing to the ground hitting multiple branches on the way down. Luckily it landed on grass and the only thing that seems to be damaged is the blades which I have now swapped. Seems to be flying and functioning as it should so a lucky escape.

I’ll post the footage tomorrow so you can have a laugh at my stupidity :)

Ouch! That sucks Eddie. Have you flown since the mishap?

yeah straight back into it. As soon as I work out how to post a video here I’ll post the crash clip. It was my own stupidity when it happened as I crashed into the tree I was standing under as I thought I was high enough

That's good to hear. I'm sure I'll crash mine eventually too. I have a road trip with family up to Ruidoso, New Mexico next week for Thanksgiving. I'm debating bringing it. We will be close to White Sands.

I've been in a photography slump the past few months. I haven't had much opportunity to shoot so I'm looking forward to the trip which will hopefully get me out of this slump. Photography business has been so slow too so that hasn't helped. :-(
