Are there any compact tripods out there that don't suck?

I'm using a meefoto and its not the best, but I'm not really interested in anything crazy bulky.

Joby and the Manfrotto models are decent.

a good read about background compression and the reality that it is not lens based...it is about working distance to the subject.

https://fstoppers.com …ssion-doesnt-exist-147615 (external link)

So you can get the same "compression" or feel from 135 and 85 by moving your feet!

the angle of view is still different. even when you move closer. you can crop though but you'll loose resolutions. and when you move closer, you will have distortions too. another thing with longer lens, all the background will look closer.

I chose to avoid the super compact tripods altogether for this reason. I've been using a Feisol CT 3442 for a few years and really like it. No center column, good tripod height, light weight and stable. I really like it as a platform for my mirrorless gear. It also works well with my D500 and 200-500 with a gimbal, so it can handle anything mirrorless you can throw at it. Tripods are tricky and I think that's why a lot of people have so many. I can't afford that, so I found the best compromise for all around use (for me).

I don't think I'd even want an a9r, actually I'd still prefer a mini-a9. But maybe I'm missing something.

isnt a a7iii a mini a9? haha thats what they called it in some reveiws as it shares many features

I think the main issue is pixel density. As awesome as the a9 and a7III are, they don't offer a lot of "reach" when shooting things like wildlife.

sirui 2204 is pretty good and not too expensive.

a step up would be the gitzo traveler series.

leofoto scores ridiculously high and inexpensive, sort of a RRS clone

my go to travel tripod is a beat up bought used Gitzo 0540 with a RRS 25 on it. It holds my old 200/1.8 and Sony a7r2 combo and fits in a suitcase. 3 series on the right

I use the Sirui t-025x and it has performed surpringly well for me. I even used it for a 5 minute long exposure with the Canon ef 16-35mm and the image came out tack sharp.

What caused the shutter to die? How many on it?
And that is a hell of a view...is that a public observation area or a private place? I am hoping the weather is ok there in about 10 days...

No idea on shutter count. I’ve replaced it once already. Too many timelapses

Yes its Sky View Observatory
