I really admire the things you do with your 'lowly' APS-C kit

No lie, it puts things into perspective in terms of what really is necessary in terms of a kit.

I'm growing a sort of disdain for larger lenses lately...mostly because it's hard to find motivation to bust these bigass lenses out when not shooting professionally. Once the honeymoon phase with something wears off, so does the motivation contend with larger lenses. I'm trying to break the GAS cycle of losing motivation to shoot because of getting bored with 'old' gear, and buying something new to get excited and shooting again. So it becomes a matter of learning to be motivated to shoot with what I have, and because the motivation of GAS is being kept in check, I need to find things that fit more conveniently into the everyday so they aren't as much of a hassle.

So yeah...I want smaller, more fun set-ups. Problem is that the FF world has lost its mind and everything is getting bigger and more expensive.

Pretty much why I love the rx1rii so much. Pity there weren’t a wide angle version and a tele version too

Nice sunstar and nice image. The 24 GM has been on my mind a lot lately...I love the look of 24mm 1.4 lenses and seems like Sony has demolished Canon/Nikon’s offerings. Kinda thinking about going with a 24/85 GM combo just to see how I like it.

good to see you back David

Rich Baum was using both the 17 and the 24 and i saw how each works hand in hand. But since that's expensive, I'll just get the 17 and use the crop mode(25.5mm) when needed.

A quick, dumb question.... I'm not picking on Vinz, his post just reminded me of it that's all.

When you shoot in crop mode RAW, does it capture the FF image anyway? I know if I'm in monochrome in RAW it will capture in colour. Same if I'm in a different aspect ratio - it'll capture the standard 3:2

Is it not just the same as shooting normal and cropping in PP?

No, you get only a cropped image, unlike aspect ratios.

Video behaves the same way, once you crop, there is no pullback

Thanks Eddie...will be back shooting again very soon now too. :)

Just made my 1st gear purchase of 2018 tonight: freakin’ batteries for my a7R II. My old batteries have all swollen up and I have to use a knife just to remove them from the camera.

Am planning to make a lens purchase or two in the next month or two...going to be fun deciding what to get!

In a way I feel like a backslidden member of the First POTN Church of Photography...been real busy sinning - A LOT - on my xbox this year. But, I absolutely must get photography back into my decadent fun-and-games lifestyle. :p

Kind of broke now since I just preordered the DJI Osmo Pocket! I don't really do any video work but this will probably change it, especially for timelapse!

Yes I really miss the rx1rII.

My goal is to add one back to my kit one day. It's not in the cards right now though.

Welcome back David!

Interestingly enough, I used video games to distract myself from GAS. It worked out well, but I ended up with a case of Game Acquisition Syndrome :-)

At least with the XQD’s you’re getting the latest in performance and they should be good for a while in the future. I hate paying ~$200 for equivalent 128GB UHS-II SDXC cards that’ll probably be obsolete in another generation or two of cameras.

Well XQD will soon be replaced by CFExpress, which will maintain the same form factor and apparently be firmware upgradeable in the Z6/Z7. According to Wikipedia, Version 1 XQD is up to 500 MB/s, while Version 1 of CFExpress will be up to 1970 MB/s, which should hopefully make waiting for the buffer to clear a thing of the past.

Got some new gear coming today. Waited about 12 months on the sidelines before deciding, but decided to splurge a big before the end of the year. The long wait for UPS/Amazon/FedEx (why it was split between 3 different shippers is confusing). Should have some time this weekend to put it through it's paces though. Gotta make sure I hide the credit card bill from my wife before she sees it!
