A photo and a question

First the photo!

Now the question. Does anyone use THIS (external link) L bracket?

I considered the smallrig backet for my recently purchased A7R however it won't allow you to mount the TechArt autofocus adapter that I use with M-mount lenses so that was a big problem for me. I also understand that it doesn't work well ( not compatible ) with some of the lever release plates from RRS. In the end I ended up purchasing the RRS L-bracket which just works for me.

The smallrig is a really good functional L-bracket, I especially like the hight of the base plate, it's a little taller than most plates and it makes holding the camera much easier, the price is also pretty good compared to the RRS.

the weight of the smallrig was pretty darn substantial from what I recall, L brackets are generally lightweight, but not the case with smallrig.

Build quality and finish did seem really good. If you dont use RRS clamps, you'll likely be ok....... I simply cant be separated from my RRS clamp :-P

I hear you on the RRS clamps, it's all I use on my Heads with the exception of my monopod which used the screw down RRS clamp.

Because of the low light on this rainy morning, I took the 2x extender off my FE 100-400 lens. It focuses faster this way.

My buddy has one and I've played with it in person. He tells me the mount isn't fully ARCA compatible. I think he has to remove it to take out the battery?

I use the $60 sunwayfoto but most the time I use the peak plate to keep things small (non L).

Same. I only ever use the peak plate now and then curse myself when I’m out and realise I want to shoot portrait for a landscape and haven’t brought the L bracket :)

Just realised in the new firmware to use full time eye af (eye af on a half press) you need to have face detection enabled. That’s pretty disappointing. In low light if eye af won’t lock I revert to putting a small focus point on the eye with the joystick. If face detect is enabled it keeps jumping from the small box to the face box and you end up missing focus if shooting wide apertures. For this reason I switch face detect off. I was hoping I could get full time eye af without face detect but looks like I’ll have to keep my eye af on a custom button.

One nice addition though is the ability to assign switch eyes to a custom button, so if the camera grabs the wrong eye you can tap the button and it will swap eyes. That could be assigned to your old eye af button for ease

Yeah I turn face detect off for the same reason.

I think full-time eye-AF probably won't be as good of an idea as people think it will be. It's nice to be able to use it only when it makes sense, and to have two separate AF buttons to toggle between depending on the situation.

I think you can key that to the toggle switch so i.e. press on the AEL button to have it have face and do the thing or not and do your thing...... or I dont know anything.

I figure I'll have to have face detection on the toggle where Eye AF will be, since I'm the same way. Either that, or simply not use that feature and go back to the old style. It's rare enough that eye AF grabs the wrong eye, so I think I may pass on the left/right eye feature. EIther way, I'm open to try it out for a little to see if it works out.

It sounds good in that you can half press and hold and it activates eye AF but if only that could happen without face detect.

I’m not fussed about switching eyes either as like you say it’s rare it’s wrong. The issue with assigning face detect to a button is that’s it’s not one press. It’s press, select option, press again. Hopefully they somehow make it that you can toggle full time eye af on and off with one button press

Seems that face detect thing in low light bugs a few people

some info related, but not sure all related to the R3 firmware:

it's about the new AF system in practice. Seems like the goal is to simplify AF, not sure if it will work out as planned, but the video was interesting.

I think 3:30 in, it's being described.
