Thanks David...I work from a dedicated and calibrated desktop that I have spent much time getting the screen right to the point that my prints are not surprises. And so it caught me off guard to find that someone felt my images were much too dark and lacking detail...my histograms all look good, and I cross check on my phone and surface tablet prior to posting almost anything! I spent a lot of 2017 recovering too much shadows, and getting images that lacked character and depth...shadows create that character and depth...so I am going after that again.

As William Alexander of "Magic of Oil Painting" fame once said, “…without dark there is no light.” (external link)

on the CV filter discussion just for a point this is with the bombo filter holder, the 10mm, and a graduated ND. Not a great pic or example but had it handy. I do sometimes have to watch for lens reflection with this set up.

I have also heard it put that shadows are the soul of an image...and I have been trying to embrace that concept lately...

I see this concept overlooked by many photographers shooting hdr images which produce unrealistic scenes with hardly any dark shadows.

Canon is making some good moves, quick release of RF glass and their new low prices body will be ultra barebones but a good entry. Though I’m sure that each glass will be $1,999 or so.

I’m really happy to see Canon getting slightly aggressive. I like their new lenses a lot (except they’re huge).

But, it’s typical Canon falling short and failing to do everything in their power to regain the market. A mirrorless body without IBIS is a total fail imo. Eye AF only in AF-S is a major failure-to-launch as well. I love Canon bodies and if they really tried to compete they could have me back. But they never seem to learn from the competition and always seem to retrace competitor mistakes (only one card slot in EOS R compared to two in a7R III, a7 III, and a9, or AA filter in 5DS/ 5DS R like the D800/E when Nikon learned to get rid of it with D810 & D850).

I also think Sony external bodies (ergonomics) are a fail compared to Canon (crappy material choices, and overall body shaping). Unbelievable Sony cannot make any advancements to the stupid screen (lack of full touch support, lack of full articulation).

Sony’s failures are on the whole smaller than Canon’s, though, so I won’t be switching back anytime soon.

I think Sony can do that via firmware. First major change in touch screen coming to the A9, there's no method for touch and drag focus like on newer gen 3 screen. A9 is supposedly getting that feature, which is a pretty big deal. Next step would be full touch integration with the menus, and I do think that will come standard gen 4 and probably an update in firmware for gen 3? I'm a little more optimistic considering the huge A9 updates coming soon.

Touch quick menu and viewing images should be the highest priority for touchscreen updates

Maybe it's a step-up or step-down ring filter adapter?

DB I bet you are correct! Smart thinking on your part.

Well crap. I was supposed to have a colonoscopy tomorrow morning, but it got rescheduled because I screwed up and didn’t eat correctly on Monday. So, knowing I had the FE 50mm 1.4 ZA coming in today I planned a colonoscopy-reschedule-celebration outing in Atlanta tomorrow. And I just now learned that my package delivery has been delayed until tomorrow. Figures. GD FedEx. vmad

Oh well, I’ll just take my existing gear and have fun with that. :)

I love the that Oly M1ii !! very comfortable for the size and it looks great! My ideal camera is sony system in that body, but maybe smaller :D might cripple if it's smaller but I like how small the sony cameras are.

Exactly, Sony guts inside Oly body.

I love how photography is intertwined with your colon. On another note. Good luck with the colonoscopy..... I resisted mine and finally had it done as I was doing another procedure....turns out I had a precancerous polyp in there so good to get those done... And the doc will take good pics for you to see just dont share

Sony Imagaing Pro rocks..... I know its precision camera, but I get the notice when they receive it when they are working and when it ships.

Net result of my Death Valley "bump the sensor" moment....... No Damage!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cleaned and checked 100% ok for the venerable 7r2.

Sucks! :-( But all the best when the time comes!

Young Keiran's telescope turned up yesterday, we assembled it tonight as I had them both for tea so I'll expect cloudy nights for the next 3 months.........

Id have to re-read the FM thread but I think they used two standards and didnt get vignette. I dont even own the lens but just posted it here for the folks that do

That was my take on Guys experience/experiment.
Nice that it can be done.
Thanks for all the info and the link.

I have to decide whether I'd like that lens or the new Gnarbox 2.0SSD 1TB.
Priced in the same ball park. One saves weight, the other adds :(

I've been traveling for years with a laptop...which over time have gotten smaller and smaller
but my tablet is way lighter and these latest gen tablets are powerful. I rarely process 'on the road'
anymore/use the laptop for big backups. The Gnarbox will backup way faster than a laptop and the
this forthcoming Gnarbox can allow me to use the tablet to peruse the picks if I want.

Speaking of backups. Poof lost many images on the trip west. She didn't do backups yet she had her
laptop with her. She misplaced an SD card and it got lost in the shuffle of many cards only to be formatted
and used several times.....to a point where software recovery methods failed her.
She cried over it.

After an external drive was stolen in Chile ....and even then I backed up not only to the laptop, the hard drive
and the phone...I've been ever resolved to be super redundant.
