Inspired by Gaab, I thought I'd try a five minute exposure from my driveway to see if I could find Polaris. There is so much light polution where I live that I can't see it with the naked eye.

I thought the best way for me to display this was to make a video from a single frame where I zoom in on Polaris. Maybe I should have added an arrow pointing to it by the end of the clip?

I rendered it out in 4K. Shot with my Laowa 15mm lens.

Yeah you found it.
I can most always find the Big Dipper and certain times of year Cassiopeai...even if I can't see the pole star I can get a real good idea where it is-

Because of all the lights nearby, I can't even make out the Big Dipper. That's one of the reasons why I hadn't gotten an astronomical telescope to at least get closer images of the moon. The FE 100-400 plus 2x extender will have to do for me at this point.

That is some serious light pollution.....down here in the city I can't either but up at he cabin it's not a problem.
I think Milky Way season is just around the corner now...I need to check Sun Surveyor to find out exactly when.
I want to try the 24/1.4 before the trip north this summer. I'll be using Ian Norman's SharpStar to help out focus
and my latest filter, the ICE 67mm LiPo Filter Light Pollution Reduction...not as good as the one Travis sold me
but way smaller and is simple screw in.

Gene I'll show you my real challenge other than full Moon nights and working every other week at night....my typical daily/weekly/monthly weather pattern.
Living in seemingly constant Sun can imagine living in this kind of weather ??

star trails from last night. 12 x 5 min exposures blended in PS

That's lovely :)

May I ask, what function in PS does the merging? It may be something in CC I presume? (which I don't have)

Or is there other software to merge shots like this?

Ta :)

Ideally, I should make the hour and a half drive to Joshua Tree NP for dark skies but I have a hard time getting up the energy...and enthusiasm to pack the gear up, make the drive, set up and be out in the cold for a short time and then put everything back in the car, drive home and unload. It would help if I had the companionship of someone but that's not the way it is so...

Even though we've had a lot of rain days here lately and there's more coming this week, it's nothing like what looks like what you have to deal with. I do count my blessings that I live where the sun does shine most of the time.

Hope those of you with a sense of humor have been enjoying the Camera Conspiracies channel on YT like I have. I just now finished laughing my way through his latest thoughts on the rumored Canon EOS RP. Funniest camera gear channel period.

Thank you.

File import as stack.
click the second image from the bottom
set blend mode to lighten
right click layer and copy layer style
click next layer above and then shift click the top layer to hightlight them all (apart from the bottom 2)
right click highlighted layers and paste layer style
Boom, finished.
I took mine back to Lightroom for a little bit of editing, very little on this one and actually dropped the clarity as it smoothed it out a litte.
Job done :)

Absolutely no noise reduction. In fact, I didn't edit them at all until I had stacked and merged it in photoshop and then dropped it back to lightroom, and then it was very minimal editing.

My mate that was stood next to me did the method you used and it comes with a different look when processed. He was using a D750 and unfortunately, the internal intervalometer kept stopping and he ended up with breaks in his star trails.

I'd like to try maybe 30 x 5 min exposures and see what that looks like next. Might have a look this weekend if the weather is right.

And thank you :)

if the ambient temp isn't too bad, this is a good way to do it...I usually aim for 2 minutes rather than 5, but I have never really succeeded at them on the Sony platform...I was all set to do some at the Racetrack Playa, but with us all moving around it just wasn't going to work out unless I went way over into the land of lost camera bags...

I used my Voigtlander 12mm to get close to these prints left in the mud cracks from a coyote during a dramatic sunset. 2 image focus stack.

1/15 sec at f10 and ISO 100

I REALLY like this one...for all the wonderful images you came away with, the sign of life in this one really stands out for me...and to know that the two Coyotes we kept seeing were killed after our visit, make the image all that much more poignant, because it was likely one of them that left those footprints after the light rains before we got there.

"...lost cameras.." --- :-P :p

Thank you Travis. Wow, I didn't realize the two coyotes were killed. Any idea how it happened? :-(
