I should really just keep using my B25 and drop the desire to switch up to the GM but the 1.4 and GAS won’t seem to let me :)

They do produce great colors, I find it requires less work in post...people smarter than me could explain it but I cant.

The technical term is zeiss magic :-)

You still have the Loxia 21, so you’re covered. :) For your needs I think 24GM is the way to go.

Yeah, I’m wrestling a little bit on Batis vs GM on a couple different levels:
1. I do indeed find that Sony lenses need to be pushed in post color wise. I recall doing a test between the FE 55 and Otus 55 to see if I could part with the Otus. The difference in color really popped out to me and (at that time) I decided to keep the Otus. I think the 50 ZA is even more subdued than the 55.

2. Another thing I’m working on is a lens pairing scheme. Preference is to shoot three in double focal lengths. So: 24, 50, 100 would be fantastic. But there isn’t a great choice at 100, unless I went with the unique 100GM (which isn’t 100% crazy idea to me), but I could easily go Batis 18, 40, 85. That would give me great colors, already one the 85, really like all I’m seeing from the 40, but these would be slower than the 24/50.

All that said, I’m still leaning 24GM. I can learn to push the colors on the GM, but can’t make the Batis do F1.4.

BTW: for anyone who thinks this color thing is too subtle to ultimately matter, it is importance to note that processing amplifies this lens characteristic. Just look through images posted on Flickr with Batis 25 vs 24GM and you’ll see a difference.

Zeiss and GM lenses are polar opposites in terms of rendering IMO. Zeiss is big on micrcontrast and vibrant colors, GM lenses have flatter color, less micrcontrast, and really smooth bokeh.

I think GM is better for portraits, and zeiss is better for everything else

Honestly a lot of my 24GM gas is coming from old documentary photos I took on the Batis 25.

I sort of regret selling the batis 25 to get the loxia as I would have been perfectly happy with the batis as an all arounder. Loxia made sense at the time as back then I had the time to shoot cityscapes and what-not.

Loxia used prices kinda suck, so I'm keeping the loxia 21...plus that rendering is special.

Either way I'm not getting the 24gm till stock stabilizes and I can snag one at a discount. I may actually grab a batis 25 as a stop gap in the meantime.

I’m consistently seeing Zeiss-worthy microcontrast and even some 3d pop in 24GM shots. Suppressed colors though.

off the bat the GM and sigma comes out warmer to me, but more smooth. as much as I prefer zeiss Id get GM for better AF and wider aperture

Oh yeah I'm taken back by the amount of microcontrast/pop the 85GM has at times. For portraits, there's actually quite a bit starting at f1.8.

But its a different look because of the way the colors render Like you said, PP tends to amplify lens characteristics, and you can't process your away from their tendencies without getting so aggressive you create artifacts.

People get caught up in the color science of cameras...but the more difficult thing to normalize is how different lenses render. It can be kind of a pain shooting Zeiss glass next to GM glass.

i.e. this is the way the 85GM tends to render...there's a little haloing as I think I tried to extract too much contrast out of the image:

vs the way the loxia tends to render:

Lost Maples State Park is known for beautiful fall foliage when the native maple trees change their leaves in November. I plan to return then. I used this recent trip as sort of a scouting trip. I got up early to catch sunrise at this location which was a few miles from our campsite. I was the only one on the trail. Definitely enjoyed the hike, the scene here, and the sounds of water mixed with the various birds around the area.

FE 16-35 GM (I agree with both David and Carlo. It takes more post processing to extract the colors I am after using this GM lens compared to the Loxia or CV).

Gorgeous Gene. More artistry with the sig too :)
The Anna's seem quite immune to the rain....they'd love it here.

The 12-24 was a mainstay on the trip out west. Doubt I'll use it again for some time now. She's got me down for a return to Alaska end of summer
and it is too big to fit in the pack considering my must haves and the limit on weight and space. I plan on stitching 24GM grabs when I need to.

Isn't it interesting how some of us love one lens a lot and vice versa. I was happy to shed the Loxia 21. At least with the 24GM it is easy to remove
from the camera. When I sold it I included the thing from Germany you can add to help with removal....I never applied it knowing I was to sell it.

I do look forward to an 18GM, I didn't like the Batis either.....yet Poof loves the Touit 18.
