Speaking of GAS I just snagged a new-in-the-box Loxia 85mm on FM to complete my little landscape kit (CV 12, Loxias 21, 35, & 85)!

Now my quandary: sell the Batis 85mm? It would offset the cost of the Loxia 85. But, it’s such a nice lens I may hold on to it for a while and see if I feel the need to keep it.

Hang onto it & see how much you miss the AF & aperture. Not that those two things are necessarily the be all & end all....... ;)

I’m seriously considering swapping out my a7iii and Tamron 28-75 for an a6400 and some lenses, maybe some Sigma APS-C glass, am I nuts?

Here’s my thinking.

I’m extremely excited about the new AF improvements of the a6400 which will be added to the a9, but not the a7iii. Not just the full time Eye AF, but the real time tracking. I’d lose the FF sensor, which I’ve grown to love, but more so for high iso shooting, not for razor thing DoF. I shoot with just the 2.8 zoomlens right now, haven’t had a 1.8 or 1.4 lens for about 1.5 years now. I’d lose the Dual Card slots, Which I think I’d miss. Af joystick is no biggie, can’t remember the last time I used it, I’m mostly in AF-C wide, eye af.

I can’t remember the last time I sat down and processed a raw file, sadly it’s mostly shoot, share, and repeat of the jpegs. I haven’t taken on a paid gig in a while and I’m much more in dad mode now and starting to realize that I’m less serious photographer lately and more snapshot guy. Not sure when this changed, but it could’ve been that year I had no camera at all while I was buying my house. I know that I still want a MiLC and will never be a phone camera only guy, but starting to think that for my needs now, a FF might be overkill, starting to think that a6400 will probably cover 90% of what I need and like 1/2 to 1/3 the price and be easier to carry around.

Wanted to run it by the group here, am I just completely nuts?

ill take ur 28-75......haha

I'm starting to prep for an international trip, and a long one spanning two months. If you were going on a few month long trip, would this be enough gear or too much?

Backpack
Sling
micro bag

how I typically shoot at home/nearby. Basically mix and match this on a near daily basis.

drone
small tripod
filters

Cameras x2

lenses from highest priority to least
FE 35 going
Tam 28-75 going
CV 21 going
a combination of FE 50 (not in photo), FE 85 (not in photo), OM 200 (not in photo), or none? highly favoring just bringing the 50 atm.
FE 12-24 going

video gear
mini slider, maybe?
panning timelapses yes
mini rig/stabilizer
rode micro mic

Electronics
MBP
phone
ipad ? may stay at home.

2 months is a pretty long time......

That's a long time to go away for but also a lot of gear you're going to be bringing. Is the primary objective of the trip for photography? Or is it a mix of personal/photography? I'm guessing it's photography based if you're bringing drones, sliders, and a lot of glass.

I'd bring a backpack and a sling, leave a micro bag at home. Depending on where you are going, I'd leave the drone at home, if only just to make sure there's no legal issues. I'd bring the 28-75, the 85, and maybe the 12-24. Just rough guess, but from the gear you have listed, you're looking at maybe 20-25 lbs just in gear. Wouldn't want to carry that around and depending on where you're going, I might feel hesitant to leave that all in a hotel room or a family members place.

the slider is photography timelapse, the drone is for video, and it's the mavic air, it's really tiny.

trip isnt photography, just an extended vacation, I think a few years back, I went to florida and brought even more gear than this :-P

sort of regret bringing so much, the 85/200 didnt get much use, however I did use the 24-240 PLENTY, and this is a MUCH longer trip. I figure just bring my most used gear, and use it like how I normally use my gear.

cv 21 + fe 35
or
tamron 28-75
for food outings, there will be many of these outings, like most of the trip will be eating outings ;-)a
tamron with the close focus has the strong practicality edge, while cv 21 + fe 35 easily most discrete. I'm generally in public with the 21 + 35 more often.

photogenic places
12-24 + 28-75, however I wont be hurting with the 21 + 28-75

hanging around the neighborhood
cv 21 + fe 50

second camera is primarily backup unless I have people helping out with childcare, or if I have my backpack.

I'll be staying at a family members place which I think is gated, so it should be safe.

I'm thinking the 12-24 can stay home, not really a landscape trip and I think I can make due with 21mm. I can skip the 50, having the king of small, 35, however I sorta like having a portrait lens on the trip. I guess I can make due with the 28-75.

200 will likely take, gotta have my telephoto scenic shots.

the tilt bar is amazing, I'll probably have to pack that. I hesitate to leave the 12-24 at home, genie + 12-24 can be pretty awesome. it's just that the whole combo is so big, I can do similar with the pocket osmo. if I had the pocket osmo, slider, rig, genie, all would stay home I think. holding a tripod with camera, I can get pretty steady handheld movements, sort of stabilizer hack, so the rig might stay home as well. Probably a good idea to cut down on some more stuff, however, genie typically goes with me everywhere ;-)a

2 months is a pretty long time......

I wouldn't take very much. A good bonus of not having very much :)

CV21 3.5E
FE35
OM200
Tamron 28-75

That would be my kit I'd take from your list. I know the 50 and 85 are faster, but I'd make do with the f/2.8 for portraits I think. If you want wider than 21mm, panorama :) You're taking a tripod anyway.

Video gear..... Not really sure. I don't use it.

I've been away in Waterfall Country...... Used the CV40 1.2E the most.....

Yes that is its purpose. That seems very extreme but and I'm sure you don't see issues like that often?

at the Real Estate Photography group in facebook, someone commented it's the flywire screen on the window is the culprit.
