I'm starting to prep for an international trip, and a long one spanning two months. If you were going on a few month long trip, would this be enough gear or too much?

how I typically shoot at home/nearby. Basically mix and match this on a near daily basis.

lenses from highest priority to least
FE 35 going
Tam 28-75 going
CV 21 going
a combination of FE 50 (not in photo), FE 85 (not in photo), OM 200 (not in photo), or none? highly favoring just bringing the 50 atm.
FE 12-24 going

mini slider, maybe?
panning timelapses yes
mini rig/stabilizer
rode micro mic

ipad ? may stay at home.

2 months is a pretty long time......

If you can haul all those lol. I always have this intendency of carrying more than needed. Nice to have but sucks to bring along. With that said, the most enjoyment I had was having simple gear selections. Camera and 3 light lenses. Brought tripod and forced myself to use it once because I had brought it. But hey if you want time lapse and video stuff then enjoy the shoot

DPReview's comments on moiré...

"One of the more fashionable trends in digital cameras over the last several years has been the removal of the anti-aliasing (AA) filter, which traditionally sits just in front of the sensor. While Sony has included an AA filter on the a7 III, it only filters horizontal, not vertical, detail. That means overall it's relatively weak..."

and...

"Interestingly, using the Sony 'camera standard' or other profiles increased the appearance of moiré, so we'd stick to using Adobe's profiles for now. We also have to admit that in Adobe Camera Raw, the 'Moiré Reduction' local brush does a pretty incredible job of removing artifacts without damaging image quality."

Does shooting in compressed or uncompressed mode affect moiré one way or the other?

My girlfriend got me a softbox setup for Valentine's Day and finally modeled for me so I could try it out! I'm looking forward to understanding lighting better. (also the 50 Art is wicked sharp)

Argh...you're making me want the Sigma 50!

These are great. Love the sharpness and smooth bokeh. I'm not 100% sure I'm happy with the FE 50mm 1.4 ZA bokeh and I'm somewhat tempted to get the Sigma for comparing. I imagine the Sigma 50 Art is a lot heavier though.

Thanks! It's definitely a tank, but also a lens I'll never part with. Some say Sigmas are too "clinical" in their rendering, but I can't get enough. My dream setup is a 24/50/105 Art trio of primes.

iPad Pro/LR CC workflow update:

• With my first photo project with the iPad Pro I imported the raw files straight to my iPad per Brian Matiash's videos. However, this meant those huge uncompressed raw files had to flow upstream to the cloud, which was very slow and cumbersome. And it makes more work later because I'll have to move the raw files to the correct folder in my LR Classic catalog.
  
  
• For my second project I imported straight to LR Classic with my exact file structure I always use. Then I created a collection of the files and turned on syncing within LR Classic. This worked way better for me: 1. Files are in the right folder from the beginning. 2. LR CC only sees the smart previews, so originals don't need to copy to the cloud. 3. LR CC, whether on the PC or iPad Pro have total control over processing, rating, culling, etc. - all such edits or deletions are synced with LR Classic. 4. If I really want to have the original on my iPad Pro, all that is needed is to click the "get original" button.

I still have and enjoy using my Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art lens. I keep my Metabones IV adapter on it full time as this is my only non-Sony lens at the moment.

I've had the Sigma 20mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.4 and they are both outstanding! Weight is the only thing holding me back. Individually the weight is not concern for me, but I like to shoot in pairs or threes and that's where the extra weight is amplified.

I watched Dustin Abbott's comparison video between the Sigma 50 Art and Sony FE 50 1.4 ZA and that showed very little difference in bokeh (or general image quality) between the two lenses. But, I suspect his bokeh tests weren't adequately exhaustive enough to study how each lens handles challenging backgrounds. My 50mm 1.4 ZA seems to render bokeh a bit too "crunchy" for my tastes.

Tripod is the absolute smallest I own, can double as gimbal video stabilizer for handheld walking shots. Also 60” tall? Not stable at that height, but can be useful at times. Super fast setup is great for family snapshots, and fits inside my backpack with only 2lb 11 inch penalty. Will likely trim the lens kit down to what lee suggested, 21,35, 200, 28-75.

I pretty much always travel with tripod, one time, thought the RRS tqc would be my goto travel tripod, it's just my goto normal tripod these days, cant be bothered with something that big anymore.

attached are some ideas of how big/small the backpacker air can be. I'm fully aware of the limitations and problems with these style of legs, certainly works for me, have a very old velbon with this system. Notorious for collapsing if not careful.

This is really really cool imo. I like that I can work both ways. On a trip, for instance, I can import the raw files straight to my iPad Pro, but for standard daytrip outings I can import the raws straight to LR CC on my PC and have them sync to LR CC on the iPad, which lets me do all the processing in bed, in the lounge chair, on the rocking chair out on the porch, etc.


Eddie, please tell me you also got the Apple Pencil. I wouldn't want to do this without that amazing Pencil!

I’m taking notes here David, my iPad arrives on Tuesday. I will be ordering the pencil too, just trying to snag a cheaper second hand one on eBay just now

'the gh5 produces awesome files but not AF .. fine when hand , its super easy to MF with the gh5 (most accurate peaking of all in my opinion) but on a gimbal its a challenge...

However, with a couple minutes in PS the bokeh can be made smoother and less contrasty (I used a couple of layers of 'median' to reduce blur complexity and 'field blur' to give more blur, then I added haze (negative dehaze) to soften the contrast of the blur).

Nice edit to mitigate the busy bokeh. I'm sure you'd rather not have to spend the extra time it took to do that though.

I'm pretty happy with the bokeh from my FE 55mm f1.8 lens and can 'put up' with the CA inherent with shooting wide open with it.

I have a fake bokeh app on my phone, effectively gives you 2-5 stops blur

Does ok mapping the subject, similar to smart phone fake bokeh.
