Hey if they can make that 24gm so small, imagine what they can do with a 35!

I'm actually having similar thoughts to 85mm/135mm. Thinking that the 24GM in crop mode could replace the FE 35 1.4

That's what makes me wonder what it would be like! Even if it was the same size as the 24GM and same weight, it would be so good to carry around.

The only issue there would be the loss in shallow DOF as it would be more of a F/2.2 then

I ordered some goodies today: *1. three 52mm filters from Breakthrough for my Loxias (3-stop & 6-stop dark CPLs and a basic 10-stop ND) and a *2. CV 40mm 1.2 !

*1. I nearly always use a CPL on my lens...pretty OCD about it, so I’m hoping the dark CPLs allow me to get the combined benefits of CPL + ND in one filter. And that means using simple screw-in filters. I got tired of the 100mm square filter scene two years ago. It’s a lot of unnecessary stuff to schlep around.

*2. In retrospect I should have started with the CV 40 - it’s been on my wishlist a long while now - but I was hoping the FE 50 1.4 might fill the hole left by my Otus 55, but alas, not loving that FE bokeh. I’ve seen a lot of bokeh from the CV 40 to know better what I’m getting.

Have I mentioned yet that I like the iPad Pro? :p Cannot put the thing down! Man, if Adobe had full PS and Fidelity had their Active Trader Pro for the iPad I might never need to put it down. ;)

I'll have to dig it up but there was a review that had a bokeh comparison and the 85GM and the 85 has smoother bokeh.

I'll be passing on the 135 GM personally. It looks like a fantastic optic, but I've owned 135mm lenses several times and they always end up being too similar to 85mm. Very recently it was the Sigma 135, which at the end of the day was underutilized because 85mm is my bread and butter. Plus 85 f1.4 in crop mode is basically 135 f1.8 ... FOV, DOF, and light gathering/EV value is the same...only penalty is resolution. It's basically like shooting a 135mm on an a7III vs a7rIII.

yah I'll pass too. Someone mentioned on FB that Sony most likely will have a 100mm F1.4, that will be more interesting for me.

Awesome shot! Is that shutter speed (1/10) correct?

No sir, well maybe.....
That round I mostly shot in Bulb mode.
But the true speed is between 1/15,000 and 1/20,000, e.g. the speed of the flashes.

Did I mention I still love baloney (bologna) sandwiches like I did when I was a kid? I do like to substitute sliced green olives for dill pickle at the moment though. :-)

I came from a blue-collar working class family where my dad worked as a crane operator and my mom was a proud homemaker. We weren't poor but we lived simply and frugally. My mom wasn't the best cook but we ate well and never went hungry. My school lunch consisted of a baloney sandwich and a small amount of potato chips wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag...every single day...and I liked it.

It was a wonderful time in my life. Heck, I even got one pair of new shoes every year for the new school year.

Ever mix egg+olive+mayo and put on bread?

Interesting to read you nearly always use a cpl. your colours always stand out (amongst other things) so it’s making me think I should aim to use one too. Obviously your composition and edit bring your style out too and it’s not just a cpl !

Heading to Napa on Thursday thru Sat won a private airplane sight seeing tour but not sure what else to shoot out there..... so unprepared.

The Napa Valley is great for landscape photography! Best times are sunrise and sunset. Lots and lots of vineyards although they are currently barren. But you should be able to get some unique compositions. Weather permitting, there's hot air balloons rides if they're running

My CPL's virtually live on my lenses too. Landscape, woodlands, city, automotive, coastal, waterfalls..... There's always some glare to cut through....

I’m glare-phobic. ;) It’s amazing how much glare there is to be cut out. When shooting water it’s such a satisfying thing to turn the CPL and be able to see right through the water.

Sometimes CPLs are a detriment, so I’ll either turn them till the effect goes away, or just remove the filter. When I shoot handheld at night, and need all the light I can get, the CPL comes off. During the day, though, always on.

BTW, I’m using B+W xs-pro kaesemann high-transmission CPLs to minimize loss of light for general purpose shooting.

I’m so OCD about them that I outfit every lens with its own B+W CPL to eliminate the hassle of putting on/off. Fortunately 52mm filters for the Loxias are not too expensive (except Breakthrough, which is absurdly expensive).

Breakthrough NDs have a superb reputation for color accuracy, so that’s why I got their NDs. Ridiculously expensive. Breakthrough have a 300 day return policy (if purchased directly from them), so they better be amaze-balls-great or I’m returning them for that cost.

very interesting...I rarely use a CPL...mainly around water, or when doing architecture...but outside of that...I barely use them...I ruined a whole morning of shooting once in Arches National Park by not realizing that the CPL was still on...back in my 5D2 days...and the rear screen was so bad on that camera that I couldn't really see the images as previews due to morning light...but a whole morning was ruined by awful CPL effects on the sky...
