I'm not sure why that is the case with the 85GM, the 135GM is absolutely silent by comparison. I had the Canon 85 1.2 II when I was with Canon and I don't recall that lens being as loud and it it was it wasn't the "grinding" type sound I hear with the GM.

when outdoor it's not much of a big deal but when its indoor and quiet its loud. but yes the quality and image from it is what matters the most. I was just shock to hear how loud it really was when its quiet :P will not be returning it for that matter. It's a keeper.

Anyone load the new firmware yet? I will load it up later tonight.

For the 7rIII, this update "Improves the overall stability of the camera".

I may wait before updating from 3.0 to 3.01. I had hoped this update would add bird auto eye AF but alas, it doesn't.

New AF settings

After using the realtime eye-AF for a while now I came to a realization....the old Eye-AF is outdated and basically shouldn't be used anymore. It worked fine before but always had a crippling limitation of not being able to focus when the AF system can't find a face and you had to be ready to toggle to OG AF quickly. Now that realtime eye-AF can compensate for times when a face is not in visible in the frame, it really is the system that should be used and not the
OG eye-AF.

So in lieu of mapping OG eye-AF to my custom buttons, I created a Recall Custom hold that toggles the AF on with a wide AF area and continuous AF. This basically mimics OG eye-AF in that it ignores the AF selection area and finds and follows the nearest eye across the entire frame, but benefits from the realtime eye-AF's ability to focus when the face is not in view of the AF system.

AEL button is still realtime eye-AF, but linked to the AF selection. Very useful for instances when you need to control the focus selection because there are faces in the frame that you don't want to focus on.

Carlo, I’ve been trying to work this out myself. To use real-time eye af I found I needed the focus area set to wide otherwise it would only activate if the eye was near the flexible spot. The issue then is that once in wide how would I focus on a specific static object (like I would normally do with flexible spot small)?. I’ve not worked out an easy way to do both so have ended up reverting to my old setup

Yeah so the reason I set up the recall custom focus hold is because in most cases, I liked the fact the eye-AF overrides the AF selection and finds and tracks the eye wherever it is in the frame. But in order for that to be feasible, it needs to be mapped to separate button or you'll find yourself toggling it on and off and it'll ruin your workflow while shooting. It's always been very nice to be able to very quickly toggle between two buttons to either selectively focus within the focus area or use eye-AF and override the selected focus area depending on the shooting situation.

That said, old school eye-AF doesn't have the benefit of the real-time eye-AF enhancements, so if you map eye-AF to a custom button, you lose out on the ability to keep focusing when your subject turns their head. This is why I created the Recall Custom Hold with a wide AF area and mapped that to my custom buttons.. It basically creates an eye-AF button that has the realtime eye AF benefits.

For 35+ years I was a big backpacker, thousands of miles hiked, then of course

About an hour before winter sleep I would drink, yep, straight up, one ounce of
olive oil.
Incredible how warm that would keep me through a cold night in the hammock.

I've never drank it straight up but I remember going back home and my grandmother would bake home made bread and we would pour a bit of olive oil over it and sprinkle it with a bit of sugar while it was still warm

Very similar in our household, instead of sugar we use freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano and garlic

Along with that would be fresh sliced garden tomato, homemade sliced mozzarella, aged balsamic vinegar, freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano and garlic , and let that marinade overnight

You have just made me realise I didn’t adjust my date/time when I got to Florida. Keep forgetting to do that.

On another note been floored with some virus thing for a day or so. Achy body, feel like I’ve got flu, nausea, feels like I have a lump in my throat when I swallow and getting cold sweats at night. Bit of googling has me wondering if it’s West Nile virus from one of the mosquito bites I’ve got? Seems like there isn’t any treatment and I just need to ride it out

Fluids and electrolytes now.
