I sometimes miss my old Coleman lantern, camp stove and catalytic heater. I don't camp or fish anymore so there's no need for them now but they were still very interesting devices and I was always fascinated by how they worked.

How they work is important when they are 50+ years old and you're firing it up.
Spent 45 min's today puzzling out a PRV and NRV (pressure relief/non-return valve) today on this latest one. Kerosene doesn't worry
me so much...but another on the bench uses Naptha=Coleman=white gas and I respect it more.

we're two weeks away from our Singapore/Philippines month vacation. My lens now are only the 85GM and the 12-24. I felt like lacking the normal FL like a 24-70. I'm thinking about getting the Tamron 28-75. It's going to be perfect for my events shooting as well.

Any Tammy 28-75 users in here. Can you recommend it?

I often prefer it over the FE24-105 if only because of weight. If Tam would hurry up and get the 17-28 out
those two would be my go to's for Alaska....if not then it will be the 12-24 and 24-105.
Well assuming the 17-28 the equal of the 28-75.
Vinz I'll have the 100-400 for bread-n-butter on the trip and can live without the missing mm's.

I had forgotten how small that 55 is especially when you compare it to the ZA.

I rarely use the 55/1.8 but keep it and the 28/2 for size reasons. The Zony 35/2.8 same.

Thank you, Gene. I've been glued to my monitor and learning as much as I can. A totally different system from Canon and my brief encounter with the Fujifilm XT-3 which I returned.
Both Zeiss lenses are incredible...mind blown.

You're going to love it and do just fine with your new gears!

I know I will but I'm still plowing through the complex menu and spending hours customizing everything to my manual shooting mode and am getting a little frustrated at the moment. Still trying to assign all sorts of buttons to do what I want to do with mixed success.
I love the manual focusing of the Batis lenses but I also want to have the touch screen focus selection activated and am battling with it. It's a huge learning curve coming from the Canon 5d3.
Argh.

Hang in there and before you know it all will be old hat.
I've been with Sony since the NEX-5 so I've got the menus off by heart.
Baby steps and soon enough you'll be there.

I have been taking baby steps for sure but it's absolutely ridiculous how complex and how counter intuitive the menu is. I just can't figure out simple things such as switching from manual focus with both Batis lenses to AF quickly without taking too many steps. I remember being overwjhelmen with the Canon 5d3 but it took me 1-2 days to learn most of the important functions. But with this beast it's a very different story.

you absolutely need to setup your camera before you step out the door

To keep things simple, I use shutter button focus, and back button AF hold/disable. It may sound crazy, but I find myself holding AF more than letting go, so it works out.

To keep it quick and to the point, you may find my quick setup useful.... or not.

It may be hard for me to explain every single item, but once setup, there's some sort of logical flow I use. I try not to double up on items, controls that have functions, like the D-pad, I dont fiddle and change those settings. Only thing weird is the down arrow to focus magnify. Some buttons, like the AEL, I dont really use, too awkward, and I just dont need it. Also, AF abilities, wide area and point mostly, use C2 to toggle the two.

Once you get it down, pretty darn powerful. I'm dealing with two systems that are different enough to annoy me, but for my R3, this works.

Charlie, thanks for the info.
I have some basic functions in my camera set up. I shoot in M mode and want to quickly control the 3 elements of exposure which I find a little difficult here. In order to change the ISO I have to go to FN and fiddle with it. That's an extra step.
I don't like focusing with the shutter button, so I have already assigned it to the AF-ON button. Still trying to figure out the little focusing points. I move them on the touch screen but haven't figured out how to quickly enlarge or reduce the size of those green guys. Still haven't figured out how to replay the last photo without pushing the Play button. I'm sure it's buried somewhere in the menu.

Anyway, I will figure it all of the functions I need...it just takes time.

Since you seem to prefer using manual focus, you might want to set up a custom button to toggle AF/MF quickly. I also have a custom button to zoom in to the focus box when using MF so that when using a tripod, I can see up close exactly what is in focus. I use this mostly with my FE 90G macro lens.

Gene, I will look into it. I don't always focus manually; I just find the Batis lenses do very well when I can magnify the subject 5.9 times and I have also set up focus peaking for that which is really nice. But there are many occasions when I just want to shoot in AF but I have to figure out how to custom set up that button to do exactly what you described. I will figure it out. :)

D-pad right is ISO already, I don't mean to put it in the fn for access, sort of a spare.

You can also program the wheel to do ISO all the time, no button press. The A9 has a button hold change ISO with the to wheels, really like that method, hope the next firmware gives you that.

I use shutter button AF simply because Sony offers focus hold, something Canon did not. It was interesting to try it out, and in the same way I learned BBAF, I had to relearn BB-No-AF ;-)a

For the points, with focus settings, scroll wheel to change size.

Sony workflow is very different, it takes a while for it to become natural, and the abilities of the camera are totally worth it. Controlling silent mode, AF toggle from camera, crop mode, Ibis, these are all new features and if you use them, FN menu.

Combat the green cast, doesn't matter too much with raw photos, but it does with video that's harder to manipulate.
