It's a stupid trend IMO.
Lenses are getting unreasonably large and expensive because they're chasing MTF charts, but we've hit a point of diminishing returns IMO. How big of a deal is it that a lens is blisteringly sharp at f1.2? The DOF is tiny for most images at that aperture
Plus a lot of these really aggressive lens designs tend be worse off in terms of rendering....
I have no idea how the voigtlander 40 measures up in terms of sharpness because it isn't reviewed by your typical 'lets measure everything!' reviewers....but I'm blown away by the output of the lens. I think a lot of times its better to now know how something measures on an MTF chart so you don't build a bias towards/against it.
My standard is the FE 35 f2.8, FE 85 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, all I consider sharp wide open. I think most of the SY primes also fall in this category, but generally lack the refined AF. I've got one prime, that is ultra sharp wide open, the 135A, which is nice, and I bought it due to a lack of alternatives. Hard to spot the difference 1:2, can definitely spot at 1:1... However at a huge weight penalty, and probably the fairest compared to the 2.0 lenses from sigma. The 35 f1.2 is over 3x the Sony 1.8, the existing 1.4's are massive, this one is 50% Heavier than those variants, pretty bold. While I love photography, the size has always been an issue, only so much I can put up with.
On the other hand, the 14-24 f2.8 is absolutely fair coming in at 800g, that's a very modest weight for that lens. 45 f2.8, only 200g, but Samyang is a full stop faster... Weighs less.... Same with the Sony 50.... Being a video centric lens, it seems to have its own niche, so not all is lost.
Overall, you're in very good hands if you're looking to build a Sony FF system, lots of variety.
