More documentary stuff with the FE35. This is where the lens shines.

I actually brought the CV40 and was going to do a little comparison.....but as good as my hit rate is with MF, it really slows you down to the point of disengaging. I love the CV40 rendering, but the FE35 1.8 is the better fit for me so CV40 is going to go.

Environmental portrait test with FE 35 1.8.

The lens works well when you frame tightly. There's some nervous bokeh, but it isn't terrible.

Framed loosely though, the OOF highlights in the corners really can get nasty.

I'm really happy with the lens, but it's not my preference for outdoor posed portraits.

That would work real nice. I'd prolly be all over it!

Been playing with the new a6400. Man....the tracking on this camera (and presumably all the new gen Sony bodies) is fantastic! Compose and shoot. No fiddling with finding an AF point. So nice and fun!

Couple shots of my son Sam. He's looking so big to me these days!

Do you think the AF system makes up for the lack of joystick? I know you brought this up as a concern previously.

I'm considering adding the a6400.

PS Sam looks like he hit a growth spurt. My 11 year sprouted up too and it freaks me out lol

It's hard to say...It's still very new. Working with a camera that can actually track is a very different approach. I'm really impressed with it and hope I can learn to use it to its fullest. That said, there are times I want full control of the AF point, no tracking. A joystick is still nice for making tiny adjustmens in those situations. Nonetheless, I think you get a lot of very sophisticated camera to work with at a very reasonable price point.

My A9 customized itself today. Looks like I get to try out Sony Warranty procedure.

Oh no....

Just heard a story locally where Sony has declined fixing a Sony A9 (under warranty) as the images turned green due to sensor failure. Lets just say the disgusted owner paid out of pocket to fix it $$$$$$$$$$$ Owner was blamed for misuse shooting too long a duration in one day "what the.......!!!!!????"

Birdie on the street say's there's alot of A7r4 in stock rooms. First pre orders will be fulfilled but there is excess. Warning is the 2nd batch will be the period where it'll take time to fulfill. The A7r4 is NOT very popular in the pre orders.

I can pick one up this week in Canada and I'm suddenly on the fence. I want A9 AF but not wanting the full 61MP. Canada's price of the A7r3 is about 3700 bucks CDN including tax but lacks the responsive AF and eye af in video.

yeah the new AF systems are pretty stunning...I get used to it on the a9 since it is what I use for most of what I do...then I go back to the r2 for landscapes and it is just rough...your wife doesn't look too thrilled about you pointing your new toy at her...your son does look like he is growing up a lot.

Lol....you should see the ones taken over breakfast this past weekend! Camera pointed at her while trying to eat! :p

the 61mp really turned me off except maybe if there's MRaw. if the A9II's rumor at 36mp is true, that may be the sweet spot in terms of MP. but there's the price issue. :(

Final image from Spruce Flat Falls, just a different comp from the first spot we were shooting, showing the big splash pool at the bottom of the second tier. A spot where the CPL was a big help, without it the glare on the pool was hideous.

I like this.

This is the sort of image I’d crop to 8x10 or even square. The horizontal framing is perfect, while the vertical framing has some excess not-adding-to-image baggage imo. Although I like the foreground pool, I might prefer keeping the trees and cropping the bottom as I like the big huge boulders being closer to the base of the image. Right now they’re splitting the image in half and that’s what I’m not liking.

Overall I like it as is, just sharing an crop-editing thought that, imo, would make the aesthetics of the total composition even stronger. :)

These forest scenes you’ve been posting are dreamy for me. Only thing missing are some dinosaurs. :p

the size of it is enticing...but loosing that 20 at the end is a bummer...I would rather go for that FE Sony 70-300G lens for smaller and more reach.

I never even used a 70-200 so not sure if the extra 20mm would matter to me haha. If it wasn’t for the cost the 200-600 would be even nicer. I think the main factor will be price and IQ.

idsurfer wrote in post #18924727 (external link)
I really want to add a reasonably sized 70-200 to my kit. Given that I'm shooting crop this FL would still leave me with 105-270 equiv. I could do that. Way more reach than I've had in a long time. Would prolly do just fine shooting kayaking, skiing, and biking. Please let it not be huge!

I think it will be decently sized considering all the other Tamron lenses so far. Not long to wait and see I think.

I’m going to step in it again and make another cropping comment. I really like this one Carlo...the tree trunks do some interesting work of some internal framing setting the stage for your daughter’s portrait. But, that tree trunk sliver in the bottom-right corner needs to go. :)

Beautiful work w/ your new lens Carlo...looks like it’s a fantastic fit for your needs and I’m really liking the rendering. It’s not buttery smooth, it’s gritty, edgy, with just a little touch of 3d. The Home Depot hands shot looks cool 3d. (reminder to self: I need to buy home depot shares).

funny enough, I looked at square and 7x6...I like 7x6 for the feeling of MF and do that from time to time. I rarely if ever look at 5x7 and 8x10 crops...so for fun, here is a triptych of 1:1, 8:10 and 7:6...for the life of me I think I got too focused on the large pool and disregarded the 1:1...because seeing it now I like it more.

Agree that the square crop simplifies the scene and things look more balanced. Cool shot Travis.
