Anyone here using Vegas Pro for video editing? Is it any good and easy to pick up?
I currently use Lumafusion on the iPad Pro (Love it!) but I’m thinking about building a monster editing PC and probably selling the iPad Pro to part fund it. I’ve only just realised just now how expensive premiere pro CC is (£20/month! - I only pay £8/month for Lightroom and photoshop CC). My initial plan was to buy a new iMac and use Final Cut Pro but I can build a higher spec PC for much less so going that route.
Any other alternatives I should consider or is Vegas Pro where it’s at?

I think Gene uses it? I've used it in the past, and I recall it being able to get the job done, but tougher to get support. Higher spec PC doesnt necessarily mean better? My PC is fairly high spec, and premiere really bogs down with the simplest operations, while my laptop with final cut is older, and runs like a dream. if I could use final cut all the time, I'de be very happy, do use it for most of my projects. I am in the process of learning davinci resolve, it's a premiere alternative, will work for mac or windows. The free version offers a LOT and available for Mac or PC (I want to use my PC more for editing since it has more space, bigger screen etc.) I wish I could just buy an iMac and be done with it, but my work requires this PC, and it will double as a video editor.

I use Vegas Pro 16 and started with version 6. I believe version 17 is now available. I started using it years ago to edit videos of old 8mm and Super 8mm home movies taken aboard the USS Oriskany that were sent to me by other former crewmembers. I much prefer it to Adobe Premiere but I haven't tried using it for a long time. I've also used Vegas Pro's companion program, VEGAS DVD Architect to create DVD's from those home movies. I'm far from an expert but it does everything I want it to do and like PS, I just barely scratch the surface of what it's capable of.
I would say the most important hardware for utilizing any video editing program is a fast graphics card for rendering out the final product. I have a GeForce GTX 1080.
I also like using Photoshop to edit video for the main reason that I'm used to using it for adjusting white balance, curves, etc. I've only used it for short video clips though and very few video/audio timelines.

Lol, that’s one of the reasons I used Vegas in the past, digital tapes in avchd format......... a thing of the past, those days were bad...

Thanks Charlie, my current editing machine (photos) is my 2014 MacBook Pro. It still runs photoshop and Lightroom reasonably fast but it can’t handle 4K video editing. A new Imac was my initial thought (the top model with the i9-9900k processor) and the plan was to then start using FCP for video. However once I specced up a self build PC using that same intel chip I realised I can get much more for much less £. Premier pro is more than I’m willing to pay. I also just realised that you can’t edit 4K in the free version of Resolve so would need to purchase the full version.
I think I have 2 choices - sell the iPad to part fund the PC and use either Vegas or Resolve or pay for premiere pro - or keep the iPad and use it for video with Lumafusion and just use the PC for photo editing. After 2 years the money I would have saved on premier pro CC would cover the money I didn’t get on the iPad sale. That plan falls apart if I choose Vegas or Resolve though.

Thanks Eddie! I guess this is our version of Old Man of Storr.
MedicineMan4040 wrote in post #18987566 Love this one more. The little snow covered road in the background really pulls me in. The many layers of mountains and their different strata is super nice. Great light of course.
Thank you Robert! I've been enjoying all your recent shots. The blue bird with the red berries really popped off the page.

xpfloyd wrote in post #18987612 Thanks I’ll check that one out too
Eddie I too have Vegas Pro 16. My problem is I might make 2 videos a year. So thought instead of the monthly outlay for something rarely used (the Adobe products) I make the one time purchase for VP. My machine is just an off the shelf Dell but has no problem with videos, video intensive games, or stacking huge numbers of astro files.
Little variety in the backyard What to do? I guess try and try for a better and better pic. And Gene, that piece of bark under the Cardinal can be yours too. Just need a shipping address

I used it fairly extensively way back in the day, started using it when it was still owned by Sonic Foundry and upgraded 7 or 8 times over the years. It is extremely easy to use and super intuitive, not sure how much has changed since then but if I have to go back again it would likely be to Vegas.
Wait for the 3rd version.... they will add a steeringwheel in that version

free does do 4K, it doesnt export above 4K (3840x2160), cameras like the blackmagic can shoot 4K dci, slightly higher resolution than 4K. Pro version also makes use of the GPU, while free does not. I'll use it more and figure out if I want to pay for it or not, but on it's own, it does seem VERY capable as is.

Ahh cool, I must have misread the 4K bit, that’s good news. Think I’ll maybe download it now and give it a try on my works laptop (if t can handle it) before I make the decision on the PC
