Nice! Those group shots are a real challenge. I'll have to try your technique next time I have to shoot a group.
i know it's old school but shooting group especially with kids, i recommend using a tripod. why? because it's easy to swap heads or faces in post if they are in the exact same angle.
another advantage is, you can keep your shutter finger while directing or calling the attention of kids, and when there's an opportunity, fire away. this is also where back button focus helps. Goodluck.
another tip, when shooting family with kids, don't let other relatives hanging around behind you making the kids smile, the kids will look all over the place.
one day, i shoot a family and the grandparents were behind me trying to grab the kid's attention... i asked them nicely to leave. lol
