One of the reasons I asked for thoughts on the Petapixel article is that I've been experimenting with different customization settings.

Previously, I downloaded Mark Galer's settings and experimented with them. I'm not a big fan of his but playing with his Custom settings helped me get more comfortable with higher ISO settings. I still don't like auto-ISO that much, but have a better appreciation for my Sony's ability at high ISO's.

I'm not shooting for income from my photography, its my hobby and I have the luxury of experimenting. Just trying to learn more and work out what customization works best for me.

It's always great to push yourself out of your comfort zone and try new things. Once you get accustomed to a certain way it will very likely match your style.

I use auto iso a lot and I really find it works extremely well for me. I just monitor the shutter speed even though I set the ceiling/max. In some situations when I know I'm shooting available light I will accept whatever potentially grainy images I get. The beauty is the A73 for me has been rewarding in providing me great clean files even when pushed hard high in ISO.

This is where I've been messed up and spoiled with the Sony sensor. It just does an excellent job in providing recoverable or great files in extremely crappy situations. I almost never use a tripod.

I've been using eye AF but only where I there is 1 or 2 people. This is when I have no room for error. If there is a group I will just rely on old school focus hold and hit the shutter button. My brain is still hard wired to focus / recompose once a touch a Canon mirrored body which is so natural for me. Sony is becoming more natural to focus hold and adapting to the AF-C technique.

I'm curious what some of you think of this article:

Is Back-button focus becoming outdated? (external link)

I moved on to BB focus hold instead of BBAF a year or two back. The AF is so good, why would I want to disable it? when I do want it disabled, I can use c3 to toggle AF/MF or use the focus hold button.

In the past, I freaked out if the ISO went over 1600. Getting up to 6400 was a big step for me.

I shot the wedding last weekend camped out between ISO 2000 and 3200...dimly lit venue outdoors at night...and trying to avoid using flash much...

I hate it when a product I love, the company that makes it goes out of business...Clik Elite has the best wrist strap...I have one on both cameras and wanted a 3rd...been looking all over..finally found one on Walmart.com...and double the price it used to be...bought it anyway...no one else makes anything like it...

New lens / 1.4 tc time decided on the 70/200 f2.8 GM - with the crop of my a7r4 it gives quite a few options right up to 420mm f4 for a bit of birding.

Another vote for Tether Tools. Not the least expensive, but good quality.

A7Riv (in FF mode)
Astrotech AT-65
12 x 5 min subs
No darks (I shot the Flame in FF but darks in APS-C, so couldn't stack
the darks in Deep Sky Stacker :( Rookie mistake).
Star mapped with Celestron StarSense
Guided via PHD2 Guiding on the OneMix 3s Platinum.
Ambient temp 13F (which after 4 hours of being in the cold took a lot out of me).
Mount- Celestron Advanced AVX.
The super bright star is Alnatik.

Maybe I'll put the A7Riv in the freezer with cap and shoot some darks and restack. Maybe not.

I was all set for $60 cable but then read reviews where people say you still need other stuff to get them work properly. Like tether boost and what not.

I am still having problems using Plus IIs with my A7rIV. Why oh why Sony is so finicky or complex. Fuji/Canon, I put trigger on and shoot, done. I have Electronic Front Curtain set to off, silent shooting off, went to AF-S mode also. Flash is Fill, Wireless ON. All these were same on other A7rIIIs in my class and they worked. A9 we say had option of mechanical shutter in the menu but I dont see that on my camera. He also had EFC set to ON and still worked.

I then put Elinchrom triggers (non TTL) and worked. My Godox TTL triggers also work.

And those plus II don't lock on any Sony hot shoe, how much you tighten them.
