I’m going to contact Gitzo and see what they say. It may be an item covered by warranty.

Usually manufacturer warranty only covers faults by the manufacturer and this type of event won’t be covered. But sometimes with these kinds of companies they will still cover this once off.

I by mistake stepped on my Bose QC35II’s and broke the ear cup. I asked Bose how much it would be to repair and they said they don’t repair due to hygiene reasons. Instead they got me to ship the old pair to them, then they shipped me a BRAND NEW pair free of charge.

Wow that sucks! Hopefully they can repair it. I have had a Gitzo Explorer for years and it has been pretty reliable, magnesium is susceptible to corrosion and there are samples of failures like that on the web, check out FM. I much prefer machined component like on the RRS tripods use.

Thanks but from what I've been reading, other Gitzo owners didn't have much luck getting their tripod replaced or repaired by Gitzo.

Thank you. Found this thread and it appears to be a common issue with this brand and the cold weather.

WoW! That's quite a break! Hope you get somewhere with it ;)

Thanks Lee.

that's crazy that the base would snap like that, but I do recall another member having that issue, then upgrading to RRS :p

I wouldn't mind having an RRS tripod but this Gitzo has been good to me until this happened. I think there may have been a faulty batch made of those bases back in the day. Correction: I now believe it is the material used and the thickness of that part that connects the leg to the base.

http://www.latogaphoto.com …ke-my-gitzo-tripod-again/ (external link)

According to the RRS guys, what I’ve witnessed is the difference between Cast metal (Gitzo tripod crown) and machined metal (RRS tripod crown). Cast metal gets brittle when cold (the evening I took the above photo it was about 40 degrees F). Just a bit of pressure on the tripod crown, like readjusting the tripod in a situation where there is tension on the legs, and you can stress the metal to the point of shattering. While machined metal is essentially a solid block of metal that has been cut into it’s shape and should have greater strength. This is one important thing to keep in mind when you shop for a tripod that you hope will last you a lifetime of heavy use in the field. Unfortunately, most of the tripod manufacturers focus on the material used in the legs (carbon fiber for mine) and not enough on the metal used in the leg hinges and crown.

I'm going to try getting this replacement part from Markins which is machined from a single block of airplane grade duralumin

That's miserable! Doesn't look like high quality casting.
I imagine that's not a cheap setup. I'd have expected better when you consider the dollars one sits on top and trusts to keep such upright.
The manufacturer deserves an ability to respond IMO.
Be interesting to hear their comment.
