Here the 24GM is $1830 AUD on sale and the Samyang is about $650 so so $2480. I paid just under $2600 for the 16-35GM which was on sale down from $3100 AUD so I am definitely getting good value here too.

Any reason you haven’t just bought it?

Bought the 24? Just the money. Still not recovered from the 16-35 payment :)

Mandatory chains like in the Sierra's ? I know you went for birds, but hope to see some beautiful winter captures like Alfredo's

I always hit Crater Lake when I am up that way. It is only an hour drive from Klamath Falls. The Oregon signs say chains or traction tires, so the snow rated Cooper AT's on my Crosstrek were just fine. I had no trouble driving up the slushy highway to the park. The bummer is that the road to Rim Village in the park was closed due to heavy snow, so no lake view this trip.

The highway (Oregon Hwy 62)

Sigma are rumored to be releasing 7 new FF Mirrorless lenses based on a patent

16mm F2
18mm F1.8
18mm F2.8
20mm F1.8
24mm F1.8
28mm F1.8
35mm F1.8

I don't plan to buy the Samyang 18mm any time soon so that 16mm f/2 or their 18mm would be interesting.

Crap...... That 16 or 18 1.8 would be interesting grrrr

That was my backup plan too if the 18mm doesn't work out, get the Tamron 17-28. I have been so tempted by the 24GM after trying it and I feel that focal length with the f/1.4 aperture gives quite a unique look.

In saying all this, the 16-35GM is a really amazing lens and honestly hard to fault. If all lenses are full price, I could get the 24Gm and Tamron 17-28 and still save money over the 16-35 GM.

Daniel, the only thing I would say comparing the 16-35GM with the 28-75 (I don't have the 17-28 but I assume it will have similar optics to the 28-75) is that the GM produces awesome sun stars and handles flare well, whereas the Tamron doesn't. IMHO that's the only thing that lets the Tamron down, other than that, its awesome!

that's the combo, I'm keeping, and I think it's safe to say that both lenses are a lock for me, even if they conflict somewhat. Both the GM and Tamron are 400g lenses, so they're not that big for what they are. A 2.8 zoom, that's like the tiniest ever zoom, and a 1.4 prime, also tiniest ever prime with that aperture. The 24GM is similar to an APS-C 16mm f1.4, so it's a very nice size lens. People oriented, I'll go with the 24 + 85, and landscape oriented, I'm using the 17-28 + 28-75 or even skip straight to 85. Everything is 67mm, so my filter situation is extremely simplistic. I've been using a cheapo no-x VND for video, and a few solid's for landscapes. I've tried the VND for some landscapes, but not enough to make a real assessment.... that would simplify even further if IQ holds up.

I have the Voigtlander 21/3.5 for landscape.

I have the Samyang 24/1.4 for Milky Way.

I don't ever use the Samyang outside of that use just incase I like it & it means I'll want the 24GM :lol:

I was the same way for a long time, and due to MF and the size of the SY, I never gave it a really good beating for stills. it just sat for the rare times I did astro. 24 is a bit quirky for people, but I'm enjoying it paired with the 85.

"Frozen Lake"

I stepped onto the ice cautiously calculating each step knowing that under all this ice was a lake. It was surreal. I remember the faint crackling sound as I moved forward into position to get this foreground leading back to the mountains. Dream Lake is what this lake is called. Sure felt like a dream being out there.

FE 16-35 GM

cool shot! no pun intended (maybe) :P

Tbh I am tempted to buy the 24GM now as it’s on sale and recover the costs later, but the Canon 16-35 took me like 5 weeks to sell and I don’t want to be short the money for that long :(

Yeah I was just saying the other day why aren’t there any 16mm primes. If it’s a decent size and weight, I’ll definitely give it a try.

Thanks for the tip! I actually owned the Tamron 28-75 for a bit but ended up selling it as I only used it during travel and don’t like having unused gear. I was perfectly happy the quality it provided so I’m sure I’d feel the same for the 17-28, but I think I am able to get an 18/16mm prime I’d be fine.

Currently when I travel I use my walk around lens (35mm) majority of the time and only when I’m going somewhere to shoot actual cityscapes I’ll bring the UWA.

Yeah I don’t plan to travel for the rest of the rest so when I do next year, it will be 24GM, 18mm prime and the FE 85mm. That Samyang is so light I can easily carry it with me everywhere if needed.

I’d say Sony have been really smart in copying the gaming industry. Rather than fight third party manufacturers, they work with them which is the real advantage they have over CaNikon. We have so many more options thanks to the open nature of the E mount.

the SY is REALLY LIGHT. Another gem is the 45, that one, I have no complaints, the AF is very good, and it's about the same size as the 18, and sharp if you can get a decent copy. Since third party is so strong, I'm waiting for tamron alternatives that are weather sealed, simply because most of my travel gear is weather sealed at this point. The FE 85, near perfect for my liking, isnt sealed, which is a shame. Size, sharpness, bokeh, while not the very best, I'm happy with. Considering the SY 85 to replace it because of that feature, which may be silly, but I would like all to be weather sealed, since I'm so close to having it all (17-28/28-75/24GM/85)

Yeah I’ve seen size comparisons and it’s amazing. The main issue I have with buying a SY lens would be QC issues as even reviews demonstrate copy variances.

I was also tempted buy the SY 85 but it’s special order only for all stores where I live so I can’t test it first to confirm if it’s well centered and no issues.

The 28-75mm was my first Tamron lens and I was really impressed, I know if they do release some fast primes for FE then they will definitely be amazing.

Joining the forum. Hello.

Been shooting Canon for years (have 2 FF's and about 5 or 6 crops plus a whole bunch of L glass).

But came across a Sony camera on a deal I could not resist.

Got the sony RX10 III for $419. Currently on BH for $1398 (external link).

Nope, no scam, no aftermarket, it was legit. Just happened to be in the right place at the right time. A major retailer decided to empty the warehouses of the III and focus on the IV's,
so they had an unannounced nationwide sale. $980 discount. I'm told the sale lasted about an hour or two until the warehouses were depleted. Right place, right time, could not resist.

Glad I did it. Absolutely incredible camera. Incredible features. Picture quality, with PP, rivals the Canon crops and comes close to the Canon FF's.

Still learning it... why I joined the forum. But so far I am beyond impressed.
