David

I remember years ago you had posted some of my favorite shots in TSE-17 forum. Is it possible if you can repost some here?

Thanks! I don’t remember which shots may have been memorable, but I’m going to post this one because there’s a lot of stuff to say about it. :)

1. This is downtown Kansas City, Missouri, home of the 2020 Superbowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs!
2. The building on the right, the Sprint Center, was built in hopes of drawing an NBA or NHL franchise. Hasn’t worked out for KC (yet), but it’s a great entertainment venue.
3. Straight ahead, the tower that says “Stinson” is where I worked in the late 1990’s-2000’s at HNTB Architecture...I worked on the Denver Broncos stadium design back then.
4. Straight ahead in the foreground (including my POV) is all part of KC’s Power and Light District, which is where all the back-in-KC crowd shots were from during this year’s Superbowl coverage.
5. I was five years old when Len Dawson helped the Chiefs win the Superbowl in 1970...I’ve been through decades of hearbreak waiting for another Chiefs championship.
6. I moved away from KC on October 8, 2015 and since then the Royals and Chiefs have been champions (You’re welcome KC ;)).
7. I miss my life in KC. And I dearly miss the wide-open prairie (the nearby Flint Hills of Kansas). That said Georgia is beautiful and I’m getting back in the mood for some photo outings.

I could have used my tilt-shift this morning, but somehow I don't think it would have straightened out this bit of twisted architecture. :p

Awesome Lee! I don’t always enjoy your signature sepia-tinted color grading, but it works wonders with your mystic forest shots. Very nice. :)

Thanks David :)

Welcome! Excellent shot with some wonderful light and layers.

Thank you - I've been loving your shots of the Rockies! I scrolled back far enough to see your "favorite 10 from 2019" post, and those shots of Death Valley really made me want to go back! That was the coolest place to photograph! Been thinking about a late winter trip to the desert anyway...

Wow, great one. Love that cloud drama and the sense of depth with that cascade of cliff faces stepping towards the horizon.

Thanks David! Caught this view on our way back from hiking behind the cliff side in the horizon as the sun was beginning to settle. Just a beautiful day with little wind. Can’t count our blessings enough.

As a life long 49ers fan that was painful lost but I’m happy for chiefs fans (I know one who is from Kansas City and now two in you) as well as Andy Reid. Hell of a game.

That's lovely! Love the layered outcroppings disappearing out the back - the clouds are even pointing at them!

Was in Ireland last spring, and over 10 days, we had about 45 minutes of rain, total. I was surprised, but thrilled! Tis a very green country.

Wow! Very fortunate! We had about 4 days of clearance but it was hit or miss as we would drive and some areas were deep in fog while other completely clear. It is a very green an beautiful country to drive in...once you get used to being on the left side of the road and right side of the car for us westerners :)

Hello, Sony people! I used to hang around POTN quite a bit when I was starting my photography journey (but have recently picked up a second-hand a7iii, if you're wondering why I'm boring you with this story, haha).

I bought a used Canon 5Dc waaay back in the day and proceeded to collect a series of primes that I loved for a long time. Then I spent a few years mostly traveling, and I found I was happy with the 35L only. I ended up wandering around 15-20 countries (and my own) with just my 5Dc and 35L and took a lot of images that I still love today. I have one of those 12mp images blown up poster size and hung on my living room wall -- it looks great! And it makes me happy :)

Anyway, then I stopped traveling so much and settled into one place. I picked up new hobbies and kinda forgot about my camera. I sold one of my two remaining primes (the 135L) -- but I still just can't part with my 5Dc + 35L combo. Is it nostalgia? Maybe. I might be one of those people who sees the "magical" quality of the 5Dc. It just seems to make images that are exactly what I imagine in my mind the second before I push the shutter -- only better.

Anyway. I've for some reason bought a second-hand a7iii. The "why" is not important (haha). I've also bought a second-hand Zeiss 35 f/2.8 -- I know this lens is not everyone's cup of tea, and as a photographer who has historically shot wide open whenever reasonable, it might not be mine either. But I was looking for an updated setup that would drop easily into a bag, not weigh me down too much, and encourage me to shoot more. I've only just gotten the band together, but I'm excited to get out there and rediscover this hobby.

Hope you'll welcome me here! I've spent some time reading through some pages to try to see what I've missed (but it's a LOT!). There are some absolutely stunning images here, so thank you for so much lovely inspiration! I've already seen quite a few shots from my current home state ;) Hopefully I'll have something worthwhile to contribute soon.

Anyway. Below is the image I have hanging in my living room (from my 5Dc + 35L). I'm sure it's not perfect, but it's just got a vibe I really love. I love the peek of the Bixby. I love that hazy, "california" glow in the atmosphere -- the slight pinkish color the sky often has there. I love the way land and sea and sky kind of blend into each other in the distance and disappear. I'm looking forward to being re-inspired by light and beauty!

(thanks for coming to my Ted talk, haha)

The A73 does not have the magic that the Canon 5dc has with the 35L f/1.4 mk1. Portraits with the 5dc really presented a beautiful render. The Sony is definitely sharp and digital looking in comparison. In fact when canon produced the 5dmk2 this was the body where the 5d series lost it's magical qualities. The 5dmk2 was the point where Canon started to get very digital looking and the 5d3 had similar render. The 5dmk4 at 30MP files looks digital like your typical digital files in all new Nikon and Sony body.

There is something special about the images that the 5dc has. Very organic and film like. Modern day digital manipulation you can find it in a Fuji aps-c system. The zinger is the full frame Canon body is really only good upto iso 1600 and pushing it at iso 3200.

It is what it is in all digital camera's these days.........

I agree with you both which is why I loved the files I got out of the original A7S. 12 mp gives you such a nice film grain in digital. The R4 shows noise almost instantly when going above iso 200 but I expected that with such a high MP sensor. Both different beasts.

Below a couple of shots with the A7S which I hope to pick up second hand in the next year or so to compliment the R4.

Both taken with the fantastic Sony 55 1.8. The flower shot was a straight raw to jpeg conversion. Nothing applied to it. The second is of my then fiancé (now wife).

Yes, I suspect I'm going to miss the "feel" of the images from my 5Dc, but fortunately I have hung onto it in case I decide I still want to use it, haha! Alas, the world tends to move on -- with or without you! I haven't updated my camera body in 10 years, so I figured it was time. I have only taken the typical photos one takes when receiving a new camera (shot of random object in my living room at night after getting home from work), and honestly, to me it feels like the a7iii can see in the dark!! I realize I'm an easy sell coming from such an old camera body, but wow.

However, I am already a little scared of the files I'm going to get from the a7iii -- double the megapixels? Seems enormous. What will my 4-year-old Macbook think? Haha. I'm also seeing that the Sony camera gives you the option to shoot in lossy compressed RAW or uncompressed RAW, but there's no option (yet?) for lossless compressed RAW, is that right?

KEH is holding a buy sell event next month near me. Has anyone sold at these events... I have a mIndshift bag my A7r2 a bunch of legacy lenses and old canon stuff. I just wonder how decent the offers are... I realize they have to resell it so its discounted but by the time I list it ship it pay pal fee..... is it just easier to dump it there?

Thanks

You are entering a totally new digital world. The difference from a 5dc to A73 is worlds apart. I will say the magic is almost unobtainable in the A73. Even with meticulous and crafty post processing you will have extreme difficulty getting a Sony file to look analog/film like. Modern camera's and especially mirrorless have this razor sharp images. At least now you do not have to worry little about front/back focus.

I'd highly suggest customizing a button to perform "focus/hold" and use constant AF. Sony is a VERY poor performer in AF-S (Canon 's world calls it ONE SHOT). Learn to use AF-C and use the focus hold. When I shoot events I still use my Canon system and focus/recompose technique (one shot) with phenomenal keeper rate. I cannot get the same results with Sony using that same technique.

You guys are kinda bumming me out, haha. I wouldn't mind hearing some reasons why a person WOULD want to "upgrade" to a Sony alpha... we're all in this thread for a reason, right?

Thank you!

Personally I upgraded to the original A7R from a canon 5dmk3 the day it was announced. Reason I did it was because I was tired of walking around with a very heavy setup. Secondly for me the ability to pull back shadows in post processing was huge. Lastly the ability to adapt a variety of lenses.

The only thing I regret, and Sony continues to get better on this, is the color profile. I loved canon color profiles and initially Sony wouldn’t replicate skins tones to what I had been used to with Canon. Needless to say that didn’t stop me from upgrading my 5-6 year old A7R to the A7R4 this past November. The leap is incredible in just the focus system making it worth it. Again everyone will have their own personal reasons.
