Those shots are really lovely!

I hope I don't regret choosing the a7iii!

You guys are kinda bumming me out, haha. I wouldn't mind hearing some reasons why a person WOULD want to "upgrade" to a Sony alpha... we're all in this thread for a reason, right?

You must learn the behaviour of your tools.

There is pros and cons to any tool you use.

The lens selection in the Sony FF mirrorless world is very impressive. There is plenty of lens offerings from 3rd party companies as well as fantastic OEM Sony glass.

As you can see there's a wide variety of different types of photography on this thread. I really think Sony excels in wildlife and landscape with realistic render. Canon and Fuji tends to look a tad different. Sony is extremely resistant to looking canvas/painterly. I have a preference to Sony files for my automotive events photography.

Human render is like your viewing it with your own real time eyes. View Canon or Fuji the human subject almost straight out of camera has a different look. I find Sony does very little "cooking" of raw files.

If you are familiar with your 5dc / 35L combo and test your Sony A73 with even a Sigma 35 f/1.4 ART lens ......you'll see a huge difference in render. It will be almost like black and white difference. The A73 will be sharp, sharp and sharp with a tonne of micro contrast. The 35L is no where near as sharp. However if you've been using a 35L mk2 you'd seem similar render to the Sigma 35 f/1.4 ART.

Just give yourself a lot of time to adapt to sony.

Just this weekend I was hired to document a Big 50 Bday celebration.

This restaurant is without a doubt extremely challenging due to extreme low light. I only used my Sony A73 for a secondary system with primes in most cases.

This is where shooting a my Gmaster 16-35mm I can story tell the "moment" but sacrifice as f/2.8 is fast as you get in speed. If I use primes I really dislike the focal lengths even at 24mm as it does not give you the perspective of physically walking in the restaurant. This is where I utilize UWA for specific reasons of getting a "feel" in certain environments.

In this particular case I cannot use Sony as a primary body. I had to use my 5dmk4 with external flash simply because of AF red focus assist. During the dance floor my 5dmk4 did not once AF hunt while using remote flash. During this hired event I did not experiment with my Sony A73 as the last time I tested I had many occasions of AF hunt on a dance floor with bright back lit or dark areas on the floor.

I took an approach of pushing the Sony hard in low light just to create a story line. These two images are NOT perfect in IQ but realistically very usable compared to using other camera bodies less capable in high iso performance. Funny and interesting story about iphones. The client was informing me that majority of their cell phone images were red and blurry with noise.....yes it was that dark!!

In mixed lighting and using available light was a nightmare to edit. Canon is still much better than Sony as far as getting "correct" colours. However this is just one of those evils one encounters in events photography. The party was themed "Great Gatsby" so I'll have to say black and white looks fantastic for my Sony available light shots.

I do find many Sony shooters on this forum have much more ideal light conditions in their photography. I shoot primarily Sony these days with great happiness for most situations. In my events photography it just doesn't meet my needs in AF capabilities.

Thank you!

Personally I upgraded to the original A7R from a canon 5dmk3 the day it was announced. Reason I did it was because I was tired of walking around with a very heavy setup. Secondly for me the ability to pull back shadows in post processing was huge. Lastly the ability to adapt a variety of lenses.

The only thing I regret, and Sony continues to get better on this, is the color profile. I loved canon color profiles and initially Sony wouldn’t replicate skins tones to what I had been used to with Canon. Needless to say that didn’t stop me from upgrading my 5-6 year old A7R to the A7R4 this past November. The leap is incredible in just the focus system making it worth it. Again everyone will have their own personal reasons.

Thank you for sharing! I'm glad to learn more about how others view the Sony system vs. other options. I also wanted a smaller setup, and people seem to think that Sony is somewhere near the top of the heap for FF mirrorless systems.

Yes, I have been looking back over some of my favorite photos from the 5Dc + 35L, and I have noticed that they are nowhere NEAR as sharp as what people have been posting here on the forums over the past 4 years or so. Though I have never been especially bothered by that, it will be nice to get some really sharp images. I mostly shoot when I travel (to document and be creative), and one of the biggest reasons I picked Sony is because I wanted a smaller FF body, and the consensus seems to be that Sony is doing FF mirrorless really well.

And the lens options do seem to be quite robust, which is nice! I'm going to wait until I adjust to the system to look further into lens options, but it's good to know they're there :)

Off Topic

KEH is holding a buy sell event next month near me. Has anyone sold at these events... I have a mIndshift bag my A7r2 a bunch of legacy lenses and old canon stuff. I just wonder how decent the offers are... I realize they have to resell it so its discounted but by the time I list it ship it pay pal fee..... is it just easier to dump it there?

Thanks

I used one of those events to unload almost all of my Canon gear. While it wasn't top dollar, the convenience alone made up for it, because, as the old saying goes, time is money. I would never have been able to sell all that stuff in the 20 minutes it took at the store. Plus not having to deal with shipping, picky people, etc. I don't know the setup where you are, but for mine it was the option for a check or for store credit, and the store credit was like 10% more if memory serves. I split it and took half in credit and half in a check. Very satisfied to clear out 3 shelves of gear in one afternoon.

Contrary to popular believe there is not much difference in colors etc. Yes eye AF makes life much easier. And with mirrorless there is no focus/adjust errors. And no anti-aliasing filter.

Good old 5dc with 35L.

Not bad once you get eye AF working, I for one don't mind the render, colors. This is just quick process in LR using mostly defaults.

I have really grown to love the aperture on lens, I wish more of them had that feature

...for DV I am trying something new... the 16-35GM/24-70GM/70-200Gm setup on 3 bodies to limit lens changes...particularly on the dunes...

The aperture ring? Funny you say that as that’s the one thing I don’t like about the lens haha. I much prefer what Canon done with their RF lenses and made the customizable ring. I remember the other day I was wondering why my exposure was so dark all of a sudden and it was because of that ring! lol

You cover a lot of range with that kit! My next trip will probably be 18mm, 24 GM and FE 85mm!
