Rains in Death Valley are usually rare...but the last three months it has not been so rare. So I was hopeful that I might get some rain while we were there...and we did. Didn't get the epic light to go with it, but I made the best of it. And after reviewing the images...I kinda like the empty sky, it lets the foreground textures and reflections really be the main focus. I wandered around a good bit in the dark, shining my light low to try to find an area where the water was not over the salt ridges, so that I could get more definition in the polygons. I was way off from the groups of people at first...then they found me...

Thank you sir! Being there in the water was pretty cool...in places it was an inch or two deep.

Do you have the 100-400? Do you plan to eventually have both 100-400 and 200-600? Both truly excel in different ways.

I have a 200-600 in the cart and cant pull the trigger....... that damn cv40 is still messing with me.

Awesome shot Travis!. I was in Death Valley years ago (before I was into photography unfortunately) and the month after I got home I saw online that furnace creek where I was staying had flooded! I couldn’t believe it. A month before when I was there my thermometer was maxed out at 10pm so over 110 degrees F! I never believed that place ever could get rain. I really want to go back there with my camera, would kill for a shot like this

Very nice. I agree that some interesting sky would have detracted from the foreground.

Thanks Eddie. Well, if you ever plan to go again...please post up...we can make a trip out of it...December through January seems to be the best...and yes, it does get the occasional rain. Last year, about 2 weeks after we were there, they had flash floods that closed roads...there is evidence of it everywhere...when it rains there, it is really damaging and causes serious change to the landscape.

Thanks! It worked out...I just needed to see it on a screen to realize that. Lesson learned...I won't be so bummed about stuff like that in the field next time.

Thank you, David! The lens used was actually 600mm GM, but the database doesn't have it yet.

Ah, I did wonder about it since it said 1200mm...either the 400GM and 600GM are both dream lenses.

One thing that I have been working on in the field is being still and seeing the landscape in a different way. I squint and focus on shapes/light and sometimes, scenes emerge that I was not expecting. Such was the case when I saw this aspen tree with its bright bark catching some nice side light, surrounded by pine branches.

24 hours ago I got weird and talked myself into an FE 20mm 1.8 G. Then 12 hours later BH still hadn’t shipped it yet, so that gave me a chance to get unweird. Order cancelled, card refunded. Whew...close call. ;)
