Sony cameras already do animal eye AF. Unless there is something I'm missing?

I have had a mixed experience with Animal Eye AF, it worked OK on the Elk last year, it doesn't work great on my dog, and I have had zero luck with it on perched birds...but I blame OE for it...

I think Sony's Animal Auto Eye AF is only for pets, dogs and cats for now. Hopefully, they'll add bird eye AF soon.

I've certainly been able to shoot birds with Eye AF with my a7 III. It's not 100% there, but I still feel it's better than Canon's (human) Eye AF (at least when I did so back this winter).

I think it can find the eye on a bird if its close now and then but these new Canons actively look for the birds eye now that's quite something and Sony will have to match this .

I'll have to see this for myself. Canon's Eye AF has of a few months ago barely focused on human eyes where the Sony never struggled, and now you're telling me that Canon's Bird Eye AF is superior to Sony? I'm quite incredulous/skeptical.

Here's the example video of Canon's new eye focus system that GyRob posted earlier.

Impressive indeed.

It still remains that the R5/6 are still unaffordable for the majority of us, especially if you want decent lenses.

I expect Sony will improve animal auto eye AF too. That's the thing about competition.

I'm more than satisfied having switched from Canon to all Sony...no regrets at all.

So my first Class of 2021 Session went great tonight...but I now fully realize why the 13GM needs to be paired with the 85GM...the color rendering is almost the same...whereas the color from the 135L is very different, and getting them to look the same is going to be a real challenge...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Sony will more than catch up to Canon. In any case, although I've not tried it, I'm pretty sure that Sony would be able to track bird eyes in the situations shown in the video.

An inch left. An inch up. Tiny maneuvers to get my camera and Loxia 21 lens into position to capture this sun burst through the pine trees. The curve and texture of the front tree made me stop as I was hiking down the mountain.
