Too bad it will most certainly only come in the form of (yet) another body, and not with a firmware for the best-selling A7III/A7RIV models. Quite sure about that, even Fuji has seemingly stopped with their very good FW upgrades.
At some point it's normal for companies to stop supporting older models and move on to newer ones: it's how they get the funding to develop those new technologies and processes. And in this case Canon completely foreswore both R and RP and are instead charging a king's ransom for the R5 and R6.
I don't have much insight on Fuji, but I think that Sony would have to strongly consider offering some of these perks (e.g. improved bird Eye AF) in their "older" cameras, especially the a7R IV and the a9 II, for the simple reason that they're so recent and they, in many ways, have nowhere to go (except places where Sony doesn't want to go anyway). I wouldn't hold out my breath for this to make it into the a7 III. Perhaps it could be the upgrade that could justify an a7 IV that we've not seen yet? And I'd see Sony introducing those changes to their new generation of APS-C cameras through firmware (since they're also so new, especially considering Sony's development cycle).
I think there's hope yet.
