Looks like Canon may have oversold the performance of both the new R cameras.

Object detection is solid but critical focus accuracy of animal eye af is not great. Shoots 20fps but blackout is bad and tracking while bursting is poor so it defeats the purpose.

And as we know...video overheating issues are pretty bad.

I have not watched that yet...but I managed to make the A7III overheat tonight, shooting in 4k, indoors, 70 degree ambient temp...28 minutes...vmad

how are you liking it? A local guy has one, and either it is his operation, editing or the lens, but his images all lack some sharpness, in the critical areas.

I can't speak for landscape usage, but eyes have the tack sharp separation I want out of a portrait lens so I'm happy with it. Was expecting this lens to be a bit of a compromise, but it renders nicely and is sharp so I'm happy with it. It does render a little on the flat side...one of the few lenses I've used in a while where I felt the need to move the contrast and clarity sliders

count yourself lucky...my 9 year old is not oblivious...in fact she is all too aware and observant and is having a hard time with COVID and a bunch of other things that IMO 9 year old kids should not have to think about...and it means that we have a lot of conversations that shouldn't happen yet...

Sorry to hear that. My younger kids are just in that oblivious age and my eldest just always tends to be content with whatever he's dealing with. Not always a good thing, but he's been locked up at home and we pulled him out of his school. Doesn't seem to bother him.

But yes I do know a lot of my friends' kids are having a tough time and are acting out at home. Plus the anxiety of facing their first real crisis can be tough...innocence and sense of security are rattled for sure and I feel bad for kids having to cope with all of this. I'm hoping that this will be resolved sooner than later, but it feels like the societal impacts will persist even after the virus is under control and it will be the life event that defines the formative years of these kids.

My boy (14) isn't too bad with coming to my place now etc But he's still wary of going to 'public' places. I don't think he's been to the local shop, supermarket, park, etc for months. I know back in April he didn't leave his house for 3-4 weeks. Luckily he's just started cricket and rugby training albeit socially distanced etc

My daughter (16) was much more relaxed about it all.

We started to take our kids to the store in June, but then we got smacked with a surge here in TX so they're locked up at home right now.

We make a point to take them outside everyday and my eldest and I go on long bike rides a couple times a week but that's about as much time they get outside the house.

I am happy that my kids (9 & 12) listen to me. They have been staying home for last few months. Only play outside on the street, usually when other kids aren't there. The WFH for me, got extended for almost a yr. Doesn't look like our schools will open so I need to start spend more time with them on their school work.

WFH was a nice little novelty for a while, but its starting to drag as everyday just sort of blurs into the next. We started home schooling the kids a bit...will go full-on starting August first but have started teaching a few things just to get the kids and ourselves in the habit of it. We never thought ourselves to be the homeschool type parents, but it's working nicely so far.

In case you missed it, leaked video of the A7siii.

For me, a must buy, some how, some way.

Now that I’ve finally got a kayak on order I’m thinking of getting a 100-400........the new Sigma 100-400. Not quite as great as the Sony 100-400GM, but I love the smaller/lighter size of the Sigma one.

That's perfect for my real estate photos and video. I only deliver like 4mp photos to clients so 12mp is more than enough. GAS GAS GAS

The cost though! 4200 euros! No thanks

On a related note - what do you think the chances are of Sony bringing the new menu system featured in the a7s3 across to older cameras via firmware?

Almost 0 chance. They would more likely add the new menu and screen to all the existing models and call it a brand new model.

I suspected it would be zero chance too, wishful thinking on my part

I'll be curious to see how much the menu has actually changed in proper use and not screenshots. I'm in the minority but the Sony menus don't really bother me so it's more the fully articulating screen on the A7SIII that I'd like to see on all bodies.

Yeah I’m actually the same, once my camera is setup I rarely need to go into the menus so it’s fine . It just bugs the hell out me when I do need to go in and can’t remember where the setting was, for example I was trying to turn EFCS off the other day and it honestly took me 10 mins to find it. I must have skipped past it numerous times without seeing it :) . I really should sort out the “my menu” section for these type of things .

With regards to articulating screen - yep, would love that. Hate that you can’t tilt the screen when taking shots in portrait mode low down

I actually got out this morning with the camera. Woodland and small waterfalls. I'm pretty certain I took too many photos and I will end up binning at least half of them. But more importantly, it was good to get back into it and enjoy it!

Yeah I know if I had to look for EFCS I wouldn’t have a clue where either. I’ve added it to one of my custom function buttons along with silent shooting :D

I had my first fully articulating screen on the Canon 6D2 and considered the screen on the A7III a massive downgrade after. Once you have a fully articulating screen it’s so hard to go back and yeah, it’s so limiting in vertical orientation which I shoot a lot in.
