Yes, I made the before/after alternating animation as a GIF in Photoshop. It's pretty easy to do and there are tutorials out there I'm sure. Probably the most difficult part of doing one is where to host it. These files are usually too large to upload directly from your computer to add to a post here so you'd need to be able to upload the GIF image to a website. I upload to my personal website, ussoriskany.us. I don't know if I can do that by uploading to Flickr or Smugmug. I'll have to give that a try some time.

I can try and make a tutorial if you're interested.

Thanks Gene, I don’t have any real need to do it at the minute but can see it being handy for looking at before/after at times like you have done. I’ll have a wee google on it

No problem Eddie. For giggles, I checked and found that Smugmug doesn't allow gif images apparently and for Flickr, you can upload and link to the original image but the image shown on Flickr will be static.

Here's my test image from Flickr. I made this from a Disney cartoon that was made during WWII. It takes a couple of seconds before you see the animation. :-)

Can someone explain to me how the canon 50L at f/1.2 is shorter than the FE55 at f/1.8? (Physical size).

If we ever get a 50GM at say f/1.4 is it technically possible to make it as short as the 50L (65mm) ?

50L is a simple double-guas design and lacks a floating element. In a lot of ways its a nifty-fifty design with fancy optics. Undercorrected, subject to focus shift, soft as hell wide open but renders nicely.

Most modern 50mm's, including the mirrorless versions, employ retrofocus designs to achieve higher resolution wide open because sharpness wide open is the expectation these days. If the 50L were released today with its current design, it would be ripped apart by reviewers. That said, I have fond memories of the way that lens renders.

This is a shameless new-lens first post. I got the lens late this afternoon and went straight outside looking for a target. Nothing to be found except this pretty little Eastern Towhee lurking in the shadows in the bramble. It's ridiculously too-cropped-in and too low resolution and too unsharp and I am looking forward to getting my s**t together with better efforts in the future. But for just this moment, allow me a little new-gear exuberance please. :)

If I get an a9 I'd like add a 1.4x to increase reach. In any case I need to start developing my backyard into a bird photography studio. The previous home owners loved birdhouses and my backyard looks like a scene from the bird version of post-apocalyptic ruins of The Walking Dead.

I totally get the new lens euphoria as I've experienced it myself. Nice first shots with it and I'm looking forward to seeing more to come.

I don't know if you've given it any thought or not yet but the existing foot isn't Arca-Swiss friendly. I bought this Wimberley AP-620 Replacement Lens Foot for mine and it works out just fine. The price was right too at $79.00

Perfect Gene. I always get a arca-swiss foot replacement on these big lenses and $79 is great - I'll order it tonight.

I'm presently watching a YT presentation on setting up for backyard bird photography - I have a lot of work to do! Looking forward to it though.

Awesome Maori carving (pou) on the Mercer Track by Piha in Auckland. Very steep cliffs here with no safety barriers. Unfortunately a place a few people have chosen to take their own lives. There is a plaque giving the story of this carving. I've copied it from a local website below:
From the interpretive plaque:

This carved pou symbolises the manawhenua, or spiritual guardianship of Te Kawerau a Maki, the local Tangata Whenua. It also recognises that this is a special place, one of the oldest settled parts of the Waitakere Ranges.

This Pou specifically relates to an early Tupuna, Hinerangi, a chiefly young Ngaoho woman named in honour of a renowned Turehu ancestress.

Because of her beauty, skill and descent, many young rangatira sought her as a partner. Eventually Hinerangi chose a young chieftain from Karekare and settled there in his village and lived happily until an aitua or tragic accident.

At the southern end of Te Unuhanga o Rangitoto or Mercer Bay was a famed fishing spot known as Te Kawa Rimurapa (reef of the bull kelp). One day Hinerangi’s husband and two others went fishing there and were overwhelmed by a large wave and tragically drowned.

Distraught, Hinerangi climbed to this headland and scanned the seas of Waikarekare, longing for her husbands return. Inconsolable Hinerangi sat on this headland for days until she too died of a broken heart and set off along Te Rerenga Wairua (journey of the spirits) to join her beloved.

Her disconsolate face was forever etched into the rock face of the headland on which she sat. It became known as Te Ahua o Hinerangi (the likeness of Hinerangi) and can still be seen today from the cliffs high above the southern end of Te Unuhanga o Rangitoto (Mercer Bay).

Most likely - a9iii / a9r or a7iv
Less likely - new camera line - a8 (can’t think why they would do that)
Highly unlikely - firmware update for a7r3 and a7r4 to add smooth reflections back in :)
