After a day of experimentation, I am very impressed with Adobe's Super Resolution. It makes me wonder if I shouldn't just buy a used a9 II (24MP) instead of the a1 (50MP). Thoughts pro/con?

If you're processing a bunch of photos, then super resolution sounds like it would be a pain to deal with in post...thats probably the only downside I can think of if super resolution works as well as its said to (I haven't tried it). I've own topaz denoise and gigapixel and it's great but really processor intensive and takes a while to run. But it works great for one off use

David, I would still opt for the a1. Seems like it would be less work in post to the get the same resolution native to the a1.

Also, here is another great tripod with integrated leveling base. Weighs around 3 pounds and is compact.

And if you are into bird photography or sports, this ballhead is a dream. Would be useful for landscape photography too for shooting panos. Weighs a pound.

I have the same tiny set up for travel & long hikes, but you can get the very similar head from Leofoto at a more cost effective price point. If you are going to encounter high winds, I might opt for the 324 instead of the 284.

Hudson has lots of great content on his channel.

I need to try this. The main reason I’ve held onto my a7riii is for resolution for landscapes but if I could just increase my a9ii files in post it would be better. I jussi assumed there would be loads of IQ loss but haven’t actually tried

I think you should give the super res a try on some of your a9 II images..it’s pretty astounding. It’s a bit of a hassle to do right now since you can’t do it through LR just yet, but I don’t think we’ll be waiting long for that LR update.

The processing is quite slow on my 8 year-old PC, but I don’t care because 1. I’m upgrading this year and 2. I’ll only ever need to super-res a very limited percentage of my images anyway.

This is a (potential) gamechanger for me because, until now, the only realistic way to generate a authentic high res image from a low res camera was via stitched panos.

BTW, how are you liking your a9 II?

My PC was only built recently and it’s got the fastest i9 chip in it I think so hopefully processing is ok. And like you this would be for a small % of files for me. I’ll defo give it a try soon.

With regards to a9ii I’m absolutely loving it. I shoot it on continuous low as opposed to high as low still gives me enough FPS to nail the shot with the kids as opposed to how many similar shots I would get with high FPS (I find the burst shots better for the kids as sometimes they are either blinking or looking the wrong way etc so a burst of 3-5 shots usually nails it). I’ve no doubt high mode would be amazing for birds and sports but it’s not something i shoot. The eye AF is night and day better than my a7riii. The 7riii would show it locked but a lot of the times the resulting image isn’t razor sharp at the eye (could be increased resolution factoring in or user error/bad technique or too low shutter speed) but with the a9ii it seems like every shot is in focus and critically sharp. The tracking Modes are awesome (first real experience with tracking as never used it on any camera before). Blackout free evf is a game changer too. I shoot 99% in electronic shutter too only time I don’t is when using flash so mech shutter is basically new (under 600 actuations).

Sorry that was a bit of a ramble, was just typing as stuff came to my head. In summary though I absolutely love it. If they made an a9iii and the only thing they done was make it around 36MP It would be my perfect camera

How could I forget! The red af box is the best thing about it :) I can actually see where my af point is now. I think that’s an update for a few models but not my a7riii

It freezes on my machine unfortunately and actually crashed PS the first time I tried it.

Nothing like the open road. Captured on our way back home to Colorado from Utah. By the way, that's the road that takes you to Moab I believe.

You can even select more than one image to open in camera raw, 'select all' then enhance them. Note the "Enhance 2 photos" with 2 photos open and selected in camera raw.

The car and trailer on the road to adventure really makes the shot too Alfredo. I also like the compression of the background thanks to the 100-400 focal length.

Thanks Gene. Just had to wait for a single car to enter the scene during some great light.
