I do it sometimes too. I find it lets you use your peripheral vision and then you can anticipate things coming in to the scene etc. You kind of lose that with the EVF at your eye. I’m still probably 90% evf though having said that

Is this something that comes from using a phone to take photos ?
As for the peripheral vision, if you keep the eye open that is not looking through the EVF, you can check whats going on.
Also if you need glasses for short distance the rear screen means you need glasses on using the EVF you dont, unless its a distance correction.

I'm legit 90% off rear lcd. Travis has seen me shoot.

It's not anything I specifically set out to do...probably just a habit I picked up shooting my kids all the time. They're not at my eye level, so if want to quickly snap something and not miss it, good rear lcd shooting form is good to develop. It's just faster overall for me.

It's helpful for posed portraiture too. Easier to give direction when your face is not buried behind the camera, and yes helpful for seeing what is outside the frame to help with composition.

YMMV though! No right or wrong way to shoot so long as you get the results!

Hey whatever works for you (and it certainly does!, always love your images ).

All very good points, wonder if it is getting more popular due to people using phones to take photos a lot too. Also good point about glasses but when I don’t have mine on I have contacts in so haven’t had that issue personally

Interesting thoughts on the LCD/EVF use. I remember a few years ago when I had the 5Div, and a good frame came to visit for new years and he had the A7iii. He was constantly using the LCD to compose and take shots I remember disliking the thought of taking photos in that way. Now I've got that camera I'm probably 50/50 LCD/EVF. I think the main reason is that it is designed to work well with both, and it is mostly seamless working with both on the fly. Something SLRs just couldnt match.

I also like to look at images on the LCD. One of the things I dislike most though on the A7iii is the screen quality. I'm sure the A7iv will be better.

I don't really take photos on my phone but I do suspect it's a generarational thing where there is a certain comfort level working with screens with younger generations.

On this EVF vs LCD discussion..... I went out early today. Eyes were too tired for contacts and I didn't plan on being out for hours anyway. Sunrise was fine, it wasn't that sunny but an hour or so later when the sun popped out I had the reflective screen issue and the glasses wearing eyepiece issue

I think I managed okay, but if it's not focused perfectly..... :p There's my excuse!

I've never had much luck using the rear LCD in bright light with manual focus lenses like the Loxia series. Almost always use the EVF in that situation.

I really like the hybrid viewfinder in the Fujifilm X-100 series. It's dual optical with an electronic overlay that gives you framing and allows for peripheral vision to see what is outside the frame.

Please tell me this young man is learning piano or some type of stringed instrument. Otherwise, those nice long agile looking fingers are going to waste! I'm jealous! ;-)a

Nice family Cory. I’m looking forward to camping season here in Colorado. Plan to get back into fishing this year. My son has been asking about it.

More thoughts on my FE 24-105mm: I loooove it!! :)

I took my FE 24-105mm for a bicycle ride from my house to the lake and snapped some images along my way. The lens' focal range is absolutely ideal for this purpose. Also, sharp into the corners...I like that.

David, really digging your recent shots with the 24-105. I too am loving the focal range and performance. I took mine out on a mountain hike last Friday. It was the only lens I used. Worked out nicely for what I was shooting.

Guys, I recently updated my website. I now have a mobile specific site which displays vertical images on the homepage vs horizontal oriented images on desktop or smart tablet. I added a New Releases page and created landing pages for my landscapes and architecture work. Need to do the same for my Commissions work.

I would love it if you tried accessing it from your phone and desktop/tablet. Thanks!

Lol he's actually been playing piano for 5 years but hates every minute of it. Giving him the gift of music while he has the time to learn though. Hopefully he learns to appreciate it one day!
