Thanks David, been contemplating the 85GM for like forever. The “slow” af puts me off but I should really just give it a go and see. If it was ok I would probably sell my 135GM and keep the 85. I absolutely love the 135 but I was chasing that 135L look and it doesn’t render that way so I’m not overly precious to it. 85 could substitute nicely. The 135 AF is amazing though so I’m torn

If you're trying to chase your kids with the a9, then don't trade the 135GM for the 85GM.

Ah OK, thanks. I thought you had said previously it was OK for kids (or is it just the "action" bit thats the issue?)

It's ok for kids in most circumstances, but yeah if they're jumping on trampolines and stuff, probably wouldn't use the 85gm

The main tracking I would be doing with them with an 85 would be riding bikes and running about (basically what I use the 135 for tracking). For closer stuff like trampolines etc I’d generally use a wider lens. 85 would be more posed stuff

85gm will do an ok job tracking once it's acquired focus so long as they aren't moving erratically. But if the lens is really defocused based on how far away your kids are, it will take a while for the AF to move and you could miss shots. It's one of the things I look out for using the 85gm for weddings. It works fine as long I am careful to prefocus shots before I need to open the shutter. Minor AF adjustments are fine and accurate...big adjustments are pretty slow.

I really wish...that the camera would hold its settings unique to S&Q mode and standard video mode...kinda like going from manual to aperture does...and I need to figure out a better way to see screens in the sun.

My girlfriend and I have officially booked our dental graduation trip! We have both been fully vaccinated since February and plan to keep this a socially distanced photography/hiking trip. It feels so good to have a trip to look forward to again. We are doing predominantly Airbnbs with some hotels sprinkled in at the cities on the map below. This is our first time in these states, so we are beyond excited. I can't think of a better way to really put the A7RIII through its paces.

Unfortunately, some of the big photo spots are still inaccessible due to COVID, but I feel we have more than enough to explore. I would appreciate any recommendations from those of you who have been to these places or photographed in similar landscapes/climates.

Thanks!

I could FILL that map with 100s of dots where to take pics. Oddly enough I live in Phoenix but only know a few places in Sedona because it is always so busy there I avoid it.

Let me know how long your going to be around AZ to NM and if you want some places along your route!!

We are there for a full two weeks, at least one night spent at each large white dot, but two at most of them. I would love any and all recommendations, especially any of the lesser known areas that won't be tourist traps!

maybe the 85GMii is in the horizon with 1.2 aperture and linear focusing. I will cry if it comes out especially if it's a little smaller and heavier :P

If I was to do it again, I'd get the sigma over the 85gm. reviews shows it being sharper and it's faster. bokeh is pretty good too but the gm bokeh balls look nicer.
