Spring is firmly upon us, and I have moved out of the dark and cold ice rinks of HS Girls Hockey, to the Lacrosse fields. I really should have been sharing those photos. Fighting the strong sun was a nice change to freezing fingers, dirty rink side glass and crazy high iso's. Unfortunately the girls hockey programs are relatively new to the area and not getting the same support as the established boys side of things. So into the dungeons they call rinks. I was lucky I could even attend some games due to the current restrictions and thoroughly enjoyed every opportunity I had as their photographer.

Now outside for lacrosse, all are welcome it is a refreshing change. I like shooting the girls sports for a couple reasons. One my daughter plays some, which is how I started this journey. Another is how their long hair can exemplify the movement. Even in hockey the hair can by flying and I like what it adds to the photos. Sometimes it's the only way I know it is girls out there under the pads and helmets. For lacrosse I love the angles they move. Girls don't wear pads or helmets like the boys side of things and checking is very limited so they bend around and through the defenders. No pads does not mean it is not a rough sport and the girls wear the bruises as yellow cards are common.

I showed the JV squad some love last night shooting their game. It was overcast with threatening storms that luckily held off. The JV teams get so little attention and support but play just as hard. I count 5 people in the stands so I know they appreciate the photos. The Dodgers motto this year is "Beast Mode", and this freshman is personifying it perfectly. Their dominating defense made for an easy win and setup the night for the Varsity squad with a similar performance.

Great snapshot in time Bill and congrats on 45 years of marriage.

Thank you very much, Gene. It's been a great ride.

Hah really cool Bill. Congrats on 45 years.

Gene/Bill, thanks for the motivation to keep documenting

Always do. I fear many younger folks only document to their phones and then...

I have the last gen intel mac mini. If, like most photographers, you're using large capacity HDDs to store files, prepare for a world of pain with bluetooth issues. It's an issue with the M1 mac mini's too...usb ports are not adequately shielded so HDDs interfere with the bluetooth signal. So I'm using wired connections on my keyboard, mouse, and external speaker.

Another thing with apple m1 is that there is no support dedicated gpu support...adobe, c1, Nik all support hardware acceleration via gpu and it really speeds up processing time. I have my intel mac mini hooked up to a 3700xt via thunderbolt 3 egpu, but this isn't an option with the M1.

Thanks for your thoughts Carlo! I have seen the well-documented complaints about bluetooth and the m1 mac mini. That’s frustrating, and I’d be walking into the situation just assuming that bluetooth is not available. Have you tried a non-bluetooth Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse? Major concern for sure.

The concern about PS not having full m1 support is the one thing that could hold me back and keep me in windows world (I’m not buying an intel mac).

Hopefully the Adobe support for M1 will follow soon, you would imagine it would. I can’t see Adobe wanting to chance missing out on a big sector of potential subscribers. Frustrating for sure that they haven’t already dealt with it

I used my old card, and it is now the bottleneck in my system. I am trying to get a good one, but they are so hard to come by.

Isn’t that the truth!

I have. Same issue. That whole 2.4ghz band gets disrupted by anything near the mac mini when HDDs are hooked up. Pretty annoying. SSD's work fine, but unless you want to spend lens level money on storage, it's not practical to store a whole lot on SSD's right now.

There is native m1 support for LR and PS, but the kicker is that the m1 version of PS has zero support for plugins. So, if you want to use plugins (and don’t we all!) you are forced to use the non-m1 version of PS.

OK, that’s a serious flaw. I’ll keep looking at a windows-based options. Thanks for calling this out!

My current workflow is I do all my projects entirely on an ssd and then archive to my Drobos (HDDs) when done. So, maybe I’d be ok?

Ahhh got you now, that is an odd decision!

Speaking of plug-ins, I really need to put some time aside to work out where all mine went in PS. I had all the nik collection and raya pro and they have all disappeared from the UI and the menus

Same process as me pretty much, edit the entire current year on the internal SSD, at the end of the year transfer to the internal HDD. Backblaze on all the time for cloud backup and incremental backups using Acronis True Image to an external HDD

I may have misspoken about m1 support in LRC. It looks like only the plugins-neutered version of PS that currently has native m1 support with Adobe apps. I’m confident that this will all get sorted out in the not-distant future, so not very worried about it.
