Not trying to have a Mac vs pc argument here :-P (I use both), but just on the video comment, you would be surprised. My 2018 iPad Pro with A12X Bionic handles everything I throw at it (up to 4K) no problem and these M1 chips are a step ahead again. It wasn’t available when I built my editing pc though so now I edit photos on my i9 intel and edit video on my iPad Pro

Yeah...I forget...politics, religion and mac vs. PC are to be avoided!

I like to sell here or on FM because I want my gear to go to peeps that will use it.

Sold my 40 1.2 shipped it off had photos from angles and all sides in listing...... sold it after he haggled for 3 days and I refused to go down anymore. He gets it..... says "Optically stellar, Lens hood as described..... but I gotta say there are 2 hairline scratches on the body you didn't describe so I dont think its an 8 quality I think its a 7.5 or 7 what can you do to make it right".

I told him send it back I would refund........ so I have it back now, LOL of course I am back to hmmm the sun stars are better on the 40 than the 35gm maybe I should keep it ....ARRGGGGHHHH

Going to put it on ebay where I dont care what people think.

Sheesh.

well, I don't think they had been released yet when I bought my computer...and I was looking at desktop computers, not a Mac Mini. But still...

the top of the line that I can find, is $1600. That is an 8 Core Cpu, 8 Core GPU, 16GB of Ram, 2TB harddrive...sounds good for photo editing, and would probably be just fine with that. But I bet it suffers when it comes to video. I have an AMD Ryzen 12 Core, 64 GB memory and an 8 GB GPU, It also came with a 2TB M.2 hard drive...and is fully upgradable and expandable. For less.

Apple are cool products, I get it, I shelled out for my wife to have a MacBook AIR for Christmas...she loves it...but you are stuck with what you get, good luck fixing anything or upgrading anything.

If you’re saying “I bet it suffers when it comes to video,” then you’re talking without evidence or research. I could go on finding fault here, but it’s pointless. Your feedback is nonetheless very much appreciated!

You are right, pure speculation on my part, I will do better about that going forward...my apologies.

Another 17 x 6 crop experiment from a trip to Laughlin, NV. a few years ago. Again using the Sony a7r + FE 24-70 f4 lens. I uploaded this one at 6144px on the long side as well.

This was somewhere near Laughlin. I doubt I could even find the area again. I need to take a drive to Amboy Crater again. I'll bet that would make a great 17 x 6 panorama. The shots I took of it on my last, and only, visit don't lend themselves to that aggressive a crop.

And full disclosure, I did replace the sky.

Breathtaking image Gene. It gives me the feeling of a background for a Cecil B. DeMille epic film.

Fine art museum worthy Travis. I love the sense of extreme loneliness that a long-abandoned shack in a barren desert wilderness conveys. I especially like the contrast between the two sides of the shack…it’s hard to see where the building stops and where the shadow begins, and that is very cool in this setting.

I am way past due for a PC upgrade. I was originally thinking of building my own, but I’m getting drawn to the idea of a m1 mac mini for a few reasons: 1. I’m sarting to lean towards picking Final Cut Pro to be my video editing choice, so that necessitates a mac. 2. I love how minimal the mac minis are: sleek, small, ultra-quiet, and ultra low power consuming. 3. The m1 processor is impressively powerful compared to intel and amd processors.

That said, there are some drawbacks. The m1 version of Photoshop doesn’t (yet) support any third party plugins, so I’d have to run PS in a pre-m1 version. And Apple is just getting started rolling out the m1 to all their computers; I’d hate to commit to a 16GB m1 mac mini when they might roll out a more powerful 32GB m1x mac (mini or imac or mbp, etc.) later this year.

Thoughts and recommendations? I can be patient, but confess my patience has begun wearing thinner of late - at some point we just have to poop or get off the pot.

Due to constant rumors of the M2, it’s certainly discouraging. M1 is essentially an iPad Pro with OS. The entire OS runs an ARM version, so when you try to emulate windows, you need to run windows ARM, which has its own compatibility issues. That said, I have the M1 air with 16GB ram and it blows the socks off my MBP 2017 with 16GB. ARM seems to use very little ram ****if using a native app.

At this point, it’s a waiting game for software developers to participate. I haven’t even used any image editing software, only has it for a month, however, such an amazing experience. Battery life is so good, so efficient. I’m running multiple VM’s and final cut, iMovie, no fan, just cuts through like butter.

I edited a video on DR on PC with Ryzen 9, 32GB ram, nvidia hardware with studio drivers, got it to struggle at times, where the M1 treated a similar set of files like they were 720p files. I can’t imagine imaging software being more stressful unless not optimized.

A closed system is bothersome(can’t change our drives) as my PC has nearly a dozen unfinished projects dating all the way back to Christmas (4 internal hard drives. I have one day a week to catch up......
