I’m probably late to the party here but stumbled across a thread on FM about diffusion filters in particular the black pro mist.

Anyone using them at all here? Really like the look the 1/8 one gives to photos of people. Not sure if it’s a fad though that might look dated in years to come

David uses it to great effect.

Was just about to edit my post as I got further through the FM thread and saw David’s images. I hadn’t realised at the time when posted here that the filter was used. I’m quite intrigued by it

Same here. The final images have a special look that appeal to me.

I'm bad at identifying birds. This is some type of hawk, right?

It was perched on this branch and I was fortunate to capture it as it took off.

I thought the effect at 1/4 got to be too much when it got dark…the street lights became huge balls of light. So, I ordered a 1/8 one to try as well (but I haven’t used it yet).

Getting a soft glow around the street lights was the main reason I wanted to try the filters and they definitely do that trick. :)

BTW, Topaz has a filter called “Bloom” that fakes it in post…I had been sometimes using that before buying the actual Black Pro Mist filters, but it’s hard to perfectly fake something if you don’t have personal experience working with the physical filters.

Alfredo, I immediately thought that looked more falcon-like than hawk-like, so I quickly googled and the markings look a lot like an American Kestrel. The dark vertical swash at the eyes and the tail feather markings match. Cool capture regardless.

Ah good to know it’s a Kestrel. Thanks David!

I posted a link of FM…but scrolling down there is a flying male captured from below (9th photo down) that matches the markings of your bird: https://intobirds.com …ing-the-american-kestrel/ (external link)

That’s a reslly cool catch! All I ever see are red-tailed hawks.

Edited in DXO PureRAW then Photoshop

I wasn't fast enough to capture this little guy in the air. This was shot pre-launch.

Encouraging shot Alfredo. I like that you snagged this with the a6000…I hope the rumor is right that Sony is going to announce a powerful new aps-c camera with a9/a1 type tracking AF sometime this month, because that would be an ideal body for my birding needs, I think.

Thanks David, I enjoyed the images you posted with it but couldn’t put my finger on what it was about them until now. The bloom effect is nice. I would be using it for daytime shots of people as it seems to give a less contrasty look that I like. Think I’ll give one a go

That looks like a Kestral. Great capture as they are very small...and fast!

The American kestrel is a falcon and the smallest in N. America. My nemesis bird. I got a few decent shots this year but they were at a distance and I was using the a7R3 so got a little more detail with a crop than I would have with the a9.

To my surprise the wife likes this one for the spot over the fireplace. I am thinking a nice face mounted print in an open back frame.

I can only hope to get an action shot of one of these beautiful birds. My reflexes just aren't what they used to be.
