What a peaceful looking scene :) I certainly think you could get wildly differing images from there in various conditions!

Thanks Lee. It was fun hiking around the lake with views like this. Yeah sunset would be pretty nice there.

Your beautiful capture made me curious…I was just googling Longs Peak to see its location and this blurb comes up at the top of the first page:

“According to OutThere Colorado, Longs Peak is the most dangerous and deadly mountain in the state, thanks to both the difficult 14.5-mile climb and huge drops. ... The other 30% of deaths on Longs Peak are said to have come from exhaustion, hypothermia, and cardiac arrest.”

Yikes!

Wow, Yeah not for the faint of heart! David, I have no aspirations to climb that specific one but do want to do at least one 14 teener.

35GM. Bokeh is good for closely framed shots, but for loosely framed shots it can get gnarly.

That said, I may keep it for the AF. But it will live alongside the Bigma and 35i. Don't judge my GAS lol.

I could never judge you for keeping the 35GM…it’s an awesome lens and AF performance along with size and weight are great reasons to keep it. I’ve been non-stop tempted to switch to the 35GM for those exact reasons, but I’m in a holding pattern as I’m also quite interested in the 50GM.

I don't know if you've seen, but Samyang did announce a new FE 24 1.8 in its tiny lens series which it is announcing as having been designed specifically for astrophotography, maybe that could work out as well as an alternative option? It's supposed to come out in May or June, can't remember off the top of my head, you could wait for the reviews. edit: Actually, Dustin Abbott actually released his definitive review of the 24 1.8 just an hour ago (maybe you'd seen it already)... Not watching it right now, it's too long for me to watch before starting work, but will do so at lunchtime. Looking forward to this one tbh.

He's actually showing it as sharper than the 20G!!!:eek:

Some quick views & opinions from you guys please.......

I rarely shoot wide as you probably know - 19 images on my Flickr at 24mm or wider in the last 18 months!!

Samyang 24/1.4 I use for night skies.
Voigtlander 21/3.5 I use for landscapes mainly - I often take it out on the hope for a big WOW sky but I never take it woodland shooting. I did start off with it for Milky Way stuff though but obviously had to sacrifice a higher ISO. It is lovely to actually use though......

But. Do I sell them both for the Sony 20G?

I do have a star tracker en route but going back to the CV21 aperture is going to wipe out the longer shutter speeds gained by using the tracker so that makes no sense at all really.

The Samyang is EF so a bit of a bulk on the adapter - But I'm happy with IQ at f/2 - Obviously the 20G isn't really going to gain an extra light gathering for Milky Way. Do I see how the 24mm performs on the tracker first? I'm sure the size/weight won't be an issue.

The 20G sits in between the two lenses for size & weight and I do feel it would be a good compromise of putting the two lenses into one for multi use.

I guessing here but..... The CV21 is probably £400 used & the Samyang maybe £150-180. I know of a used 20G up for sale £725.

Whatever you do don’t get the 20G or I’ll be jealous. :p I was so torn between 24GM and 20G and I picked 24GM purely because I wanted that extra 2/3 stop. But, in sharpness and AF speed reviewers give the 20G the edge. It’s an amazing lens from all I’ve seen.

I’m very happy with my 24GM though…between 20G and 24GM there was no wrong answer for me.

Really? That's interesting! (Haven't had the opportunity to watch it completely yet...) It does sound like a very interesting lens after all. Does it also handle focus breathing better than the 20G?

I watched one video where they were focusing on different objects indoors from a tripod (the 'test' they tend do for focusing noise & speed) & it didn't appear to focus breath at all - or very little anyway. But then again, that's from very close to a couple of metres not to infinity.

:-D:-D

I think both lenses are pretty much up there at the top anyway :-)

I totally get it and I can't judge since I used to have five 50mm lenses and one FE 55.

Beautiful. I like the hue shift…foreground flowers appear more blue but graduates toward violet/purple towards the back. Nice sense of depth in that.

Thanks David. I'm quite pleased because Bluebells are normally my nemesis!! Hence I don't normally bother with them :-D

The colour change is strange (and natural) though. The sunlight really gives more of a purple look.

This photo was taken with my 4 x 5 Speed Graphic back around 1974. I just acquired an Epson V850 scanner and this is the first time I've been able to scan this 4 x 5 negative in a single pass. Previously, I've had to scan twice and merge. The film holders on the V850 have anti-neuton ring glass which also helps keep the negative flat.

I scanned the negative using Silverfast as a positive 48-bit RAW DNG file then converted in Lightroom using the Negative Lab Pro plugin. After converting and cropping, I exported it as a Tif file for Photoshop. I removed dust spots, sharpened and resized, then saved as a jpg for sharing.

I may have posted this image before and if so my apologies. I wanted to test my scanner and workflow using it and I'm very pleased with the results. Now I wish I had my Speed Graphic again.
