From what I am told, these trees are too far north and inland where it was 25 degrees warmer than the Bay area. As a result they rarely see the marine layer. But that was a hope...as slim as it was.

Just north of Marin, south of Petaluma, West of 101 is what I was thinking. Depends on the time of year too, or at least it used to before the climate patterns changed. While you were here recently there should have been a relatively deep marine layer in the mornings.

Others might quickly do sky swaps on these, but I took it as a challenge to make completely clear skies work...I think it supports the minimalist intentions of the image. Fun spent chasing lone oak trees in the California hillsides.

Nice. Black and white lends itself to the 'emptiness of this scene.

yeah, my intent was to shoot everything for black and white, I even shot most of the time with the camera in B&W mode.

These were all up by Petaluma. It was dang near 90 and just exposed, we were pretty well burned by the time we were done. There was a pretty heavy marine layer 2 of the days, and a thinner layer on Thursday. But the mornings were spent culling images and working on my day job stuff, and no real time to get out and explore. It runs the risk of putting me behind for the evening shoots for the client.

Ah sorry, I don’t actually leave until the 28th, just trying to learn the basics in the mean time

Ah. Ok. Good plan. I would say test out settings and what not ahead of time on something that doesn't matter and get familiar with it all.

Kid's haven't gotten out much during COVID...we started homeschooling them in the fall because there was no concrete plan from the school systems out here.

Now that my me, my wife, and oldest are vaccinated and the cases in the area are pretty low these days, we've started to take the kids to museums... Mainly to put the curriculum we've been teaching them into context. It's pretty rewarding to see how fascinated by the exhibits and look at them through the lens of what we've been teaching them. Excited to take them to the wildlife parks in the area, zoo, and NASA eventually.

If you're back out this way again and you have time, let me know. I'm only about 10 miles from Petaluma.

I can finally post in this thread... :)

First night out with my Sony A7Siii + 20mm f/1.8 G. Original goal was to capture the Milky Way, but as you can tell in the photo, clouds were in the way and so I settled for this as my "first night" of normal photography...

A7Siii
20mm f/1.8 G
f/stop = 1.8
Exposure = 30 seconds
ISO = 10,000

I decided to not touch it up in lightroom/photoshop.

Great images of the kids and that is a great museum. Been there a number of times myself.

Managed to get this one today. I was snapping away trying to make sure I got the best composition and focus, and then I noticed this little fella crawling around my subject. So I started focussing on the spider, and took a few more, then it must of dropped. Quite chuffed to have captured it hanging and in perfect focus! Best viewed full size on Flickr. 16-35 GM...

I don't normally like spiders, but that one looks small enough to not be a bother...and this is a good example of why you should have a fast UWA...

Thanks Travis! Nice to be back.
I hope everyone is still here.
p.s. I was supposed to go for fireflies in the Smokies next weekend but the weather looks crap. At my house
yesterday morning it was 32F. I don't remember fireflies in the cold ever.

Congrats to you & new bride, welcome back, and now begin to enjoy retirement. .

Use to see what you call fireflies every night up in the Appalachians at my grand-parents during the summer months. Everyone called them Lightning bugs. Really not sure we are talking about the same thing, but they did light up. Use to catch them and put them in glass jars, then release them.
