Non photo question to the group...

When building a new website, would you focus on your favorite images by genre, or by project, location client galleries?

My current site has genres and then sub galleries for every location, client etc. I am building a new site and thinking it might just be a portfolio showcase instead of a collection of smaller galleries. More eye candy, less navigation on the site.

I'm designing a website as a portfolio, and I'm certainly looking to go more by broad genre (i.e. portrait, travel, nature, etc.) rather than anything else. However, depending on the breadth and depth of your portfolio i.e. how many genres you shoot and how much 'equilibrium' between the genres, you could do something different (e.g. different locations for landscapes...for travel for me I might split by continent or at least think in advance of how I could do this once I reach a critical mass of photos; for my portrait I might do different subsections for nudes, swimsuit, fashion, cosplay/fun).

There are lots of options in how to approach it.

Since what I'm planning is not at all a professional or client-oriented site, I see no need to organize it accordingly (I wouldn't do an organization by project or by model for my portrait stuff, since my website won't be designed to work with models per se).

Hopefully that's helpful.

Yeah, there are several right answers. My goal it to make it a portfolio display. If a potential client wants to see representative work, I can direct them to the site and they can see pretty pictures...as pretty as I can produce. I don't want to to be a ton of navigation, requiring bread crumbs to find your way out. I want it to be more visual. I have looked at a ton of photography websites...I have looked up most of the well known photographers I know and am not generally excited. There are some that stand out...our very own Alfredo has a very nice, well thought out, well laid out clean site. And I like it. There are others, well known folks, that it looks a hot mess...and I know why, it is all about keywords and SEO. At the end of the day I want to create something that is uniquely mine, and I have ideas about how to accomplish that, but am stuck on the page hierarchy, because it really needs to be built with that in mind.

Wow, thank you Travis! It took me some time to arrive at a clean layout that works for me. Like you mentioned, the website structure and hierarchy is super important as is the overall aesthetic.

Will you be posting mainly landscape images on your site or a combination of landscape, race track, architecture, and portrait work?

My immediate reaction is there are likely several right/best answers depending on what your specific goal for the website is.

I think my suggestion is to develop a clear sense of what your goal or objective is and then find concept direction from precedent-worthy websites that share the same goal or objective as you and then iterate off of them. Leverage the already-established greatness of others. :)

And this raises a potentially fun activity for this group: finding and sharing favorite photography gallery websites. I nearly never look at photographer’s websites and it would be fun to be exposed to a few of them.

David, I enjoy the work of these photographers.

I think I am going to keep it organized by parent genre, and then just have a collection of my best representative work in that genre, keeping it at least current, but also including some of my all time favorite images. But weeding out a lot of the stuff that I no longer want to see on there. A friend told me recently, don't have anything on a website that represents work you don't currently produce or want to do...

And it shows. It is well done.
You hit the 4 main categories. Landscape, Architecture & Design, People and Motorsports. There are some oddities that don't really fit, but I will leave them out, they are more for my own enjoyment, and not really anything I ever see myself being hired to do.

I am gonna go check those out.

Sounds like a good plan my friend. Thank you again.

Here is another one I enjoy. Great channel on YouTube too. I think everyone knows Alex Noriega (super clean site), David Thompson, Erin Babnik, Sean Bagshaw, Marc Adamus so I won't link their sites here.

It would be so much easier if I would just pick one thing to point my camera at...but I enjoy the variety too much!

A7C split EVF report.
Per GGWECI's suggestion I turned the LCD out for this mornings walkabout.
Put a screen protector on it :)
I could not reproduce the split screen phenomena with the LCD facing out.
OK, it's a workaround.
Wish there was one for the A1's EVF blackout issue :)

Really hope Sony addresses it. I too, like to keep the LCD turned inwards when primarily using the EVF.

Here’s the original post I was referring to:

Thanks Rob.
Yep, read about that at DPR as well.
So far has happened with the A1 only 5 fingers worth. I just like in an area
that makes the UK look bright.
My current workaround is the larger eye cup many linked to.
I will place a small bit of gaffers with the prescribed 4mm hole next time I grab
the A1.

The FE 200-600mm G is not a fun lens to use - especially not on the street. I want a 100-400GM, which is as light as a 70-200GM, and would be a fun lens to use on the street.

The Zeiss Batis 135mm is a superfun lens to use. Very lightweight and stunningly sharp too. I'd love a 135GM for its 1.3 stop light advantage, but the much lighter/smaller Batis matches the GM's acuity while providing exceptional color rendering. The Batis bokeh never leaves me wanting either.

Stupid question. What is the purpose of the website?
Is it to show your photos or is it to get work?
From reviews I have seen, people are lazy, the portfolio should be one click away at most and should contain what you are trying to sell, and what you do.

Not had a chance to edit anything yet from Skye at the weekend but I ended up only using my 16-35 in addition to the GoPro and drone. I took all my other lenses but they really weren’t needed due to the versatility of the zoom for that sort of trip. I think going forward I’ll only take the 16-35 and 35-70 for campervan trips. I’ve got a habit of taking too much gear places “just in case”. Photos to follow…
